The St. Catharines Rankin Construction Falcons saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-5 shootout loss to the LaSalle Vipers Sunday at the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase in Caledonia.
The Falcons led 3-1 after one period, 4-3 after two and were up 5-4 until the Vipers tied the game with 18 seconds to play.
Following a scoreless overtime period, the Vipers earned the extra point when Brody Jones beat Hayden Jeffery in the fifth round of the shootout. All five Falcons shooters came up empty.
“I think we let one get away,” St. Catharines president of hockey operations and head coach Tyler Bielby said. “We did some things well obviously to be able to score five goals in the game, but we had that lead and didn’t execute on the power play and that ended up being the difference.
“We wanted that game tonight, it should have been our win,”
Treyson Dewar had two goals for the Falcons while Dallys Hibbert, Cal Petrovsky and Brendan Grenville added singles.
The Falcons began the tournament with a 3-1 win over the Stratford Warriors Friday.
“We took three of the four points on the weekend and we’re real proud of the way the guys have been playing over the last two to three weeks and putting together the stretch of wins,” Bielby said.
Jeffery, who was named GOJHL goaltender of the month for November, made 32 saves for the win.
The second-year netminder won all six starts in November, improving his record to 12-3-0 on the season. The highlight was a 21-save effort to earn his first shutout of the season in a1-0 win over Fort Erie Nov. 29.
Grenville, Ally Mostafaie, with his 12th of the season, and Dillon Atkinson scored for St. Catharines.
The game was a 10:30 a.m. start.
“It’s a little bit of change but you know some of these kids aren’t too far from minor hockey where they’re playing those Friday tournament games so we wanted to make sure there were no excuses and to start on time,” Bielby said. “It was a little sloppy but at the same time I was proud of the way the guys worked long term and then closed that game out.
“We played two good teams from the west this weekend. We will take the three points and move forward.”
The Falcons are at Hamilton Thursday, home to Cambridge Friday and at Welland Sunday.
Forwards Cam Lowe and Matt Fries are out with upper body injuries and listed as week to week.
“We talked to the boys about believing in our depth and making sure it’s next man up and we’ll evaluate those guys.”
Meteors drop two
The Meteors dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Vipers Saturday and a 6-2 decision to the Chatham Maroons Sunday to fall to 16-7-2.
Sam Tonelli had two goals and R.J. Schmidt one in the loss to LaSalle.
John Lloyd made 20 saves and took the loss.
Ethan Pepperall and Kyle Adamo scored for the Mets.
Finn Moffett kicked out 25 shots in a losing effort.
Meteors general manager/coach Nik Passero said the showcase was well done.
“Great job Caledonia on a great weekend,” he said. “League did a superb job at showcasing our talent as always.
“Not the outcomes we are looking for, but we will be better for it.”
The Mets are home to Hamilton Saturday and at Pelham Sunday.
Panthers split
Logan Snyder made 36 saves as the Pelham Panthers defeated the Elmira Sugar Kings 6-3 Friday.
Caleb Macleish, Dylan Leslie, Ty Boone, Owen Hunks, Cooper Vickerman and Nick Gilby scored for the Panthers.
The Panthers then dropped a 2-1 decision to the Waterloo Siskins in overtime Sunday night in a chippy affair that saw the Panthers called for 68 minutes in penalties on 23 infraction and the Siskins 34 minutes on 13 infractions.
Boone gave Pelham a 1-0 lead early in the third before the Siskins replied just over a minute later to tie the game.
Former Niagara IceDog Evan Klein netted the winner for Waterloo early in OT on the power play.
