High school bonspiel set for Jan. 29
The 2025 Niagara Region High School Curling Showcase Bonspiel will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the St. Catharines Curling Club.
The event features 32 (16 boys and 16 girls) of the best local curlers in the Niagara Region from 15 high schools and is sponsored by Niagara College Athletics and the St. Catharines Curling Club.
“A component of the Niagara College Knights Curling program mission is to promote high school curling in the Niagara Region. We want to be part of the initiatives to grow the game locally, by providing local curlers more opportunities to play competitively and increase the profile of our OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) Niagara College Knights Curling program (competitive men, women and mixed double teams),” a press release read.
The curling showcase event was the idea of Niagara College curling assistant coach/recruitment Rino Berardi, who thought of the idea to replicate the High School Soccer Showcase, which has proven to be a huge success in highlighting local high school soccer players.
“This High School Showcase Bonspiel will spotlight and display the talents of all the best young curlers in Niagara. It has been met with great support from the high school curling coaches and excitement by the curlers themselves,” Berardi said.
Individual curlers will be divided into four teams (four boys and four girls teams). The teams will play a three-game round-robin schedule, with a unique scoring system to declare a 2025 showcase champion girls and boys team.
“Looking forward to showcasing some of the best high school talent that Niagara Region has to offer; some of whom plan on attending Niagara College next year,” said Richard Reist, Niagara Knights men’s curling head coach.
Other Knights curling coaches are: Jordan Thin, technical director; Chris Poulouski, women’s head coach; Jackie Kelly, assistant coach, mixed doubles.
