Denis Morris hosted the opening slate of games and Reds players were thrilled to see so many fans in the stands to cheer on the school’s newest team.
“The Reds battled hard in our first two games with incredible efforts from all our players. In Game 1, the ladies had a slow start against Saint Michael’s but battled back from a three-touchdown deficit with sacks by rusher Angel Adeboye and a Pick 6 from Kailey McKimm to close the gap and tie up the game before eventually losing by a touchdown in the final minute of play. Reese Praskey and Kennedy Forster added to the offence with a touchdown each and Chloe Huton picked up a pair of TDs in the second half,” Denis Morris head coach Erin Clark said. “In Game 2, the ladies earned a decisive victory over Lakeshore with touchdowns by Elyse Naphin and Tessa Pingue and an interception by Julia Chininea. Quarterback Danika Spicer led the offence with an understanding of the game only matched by an amazing arm. Standout performances of the day go to Alyssa Hutton, who locked down the defence and took, flags, belts and shorts in her efforts to hold the line and Isabella Inthiemvong, a freshman, who stunned everyone with her evasive run to claim two touchdowns and an extra point.”
Saint Paul coach Lindsay Pacilli saw her squad open with a win over Saint Francis and a close loss to Holy Cross.
“The girls played hard in their game against Holy Cross, but came out one point shy. Touchdowns during the game were scored by Emily Ganski, Olivia Taddeo and Teagan Clark,” Pacilli said. “The second game against Saint Francis was a nail-biter. Saint Paul was down 32-14 at halftime but an amazing interception by Shylah Powell was the pivotal turning point the girls needed. Three touchdowns by Teahan Clark and a touchdown each by Alayna Bell and Emily Ganski brought the girls to their 46-45 victory over Saint Francis. Quarterbacks Charlotte Clark and Sophia Sacco, with help from Natasha Rushambara, led the offensive play, while Grayce Bell, Maliah Paul, Kimberly Saunders and Rose Peters were strong on defence.”
Action resumes Tuesday at Kalar Road Sportspark in Niagara Falls.
