IceDogs add veteran goaltender
The Niagara IceDogs added another piece to their goaltending puzzle Friday, acquiring overage goaltender Daniel Murphy from the Erie Otters in exchange for Windsor’s third-round pick (2024) and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2021 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
“We are thrilled to be bringing Dan on board in Niagara,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. “Dan is an elite goalie at our level and is a guy who has given us problems against Erie for years.
“He is a consistent game changer who gives his all night in and night out. He has a relentless work ethic off the ice as well. Dan is a guy who is well respected by his peers, and who wants to win which is exactly what we plan to do this season.”
Murphy, a 20 year-old Guelph native, was a former 15th-round selection (301st overall) of the Otters in 2016. He became the starting goaltender for the Otters in 2018-19, and has continued to improve each season since starting his OHL career in 2017-18. In 43 games last season, he had a goals against average of 3.41 and a .891 save percentage. He ranked 10th among all OHL goaltenders when the 2019-20 season was cancelled.
“I feel with this trade we have really set ourselves up properly to have a great season and surprise some people, while keeping our extremely bright future intact. I can’t wait to get started with Dan in December,” Burke said.
Murphy joins incumbents Tucker Tynan, Andrew MacLean, Christian Sbaraglia, Josh Rosenzweig and 2020 Under-18 Priority Selection Jacob Osborne, making for a crowded crease.
BPSN and the COVID-19 pandemic
Like all small businesses dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, BPSN is not sure what the business landscape will look like when things return to normal. Our website is financed primarily through advertising revenues and partnership agreements with many local sports and educational organizations in Niagara. Our goal is to continue providing our readers with the extensive local sports coverage you have come to expect from our site. Since our inception, we have written more than 2,800 stories on our local athletes and teams. Many of our readers have given us one-time donations or send us monthly contributions to help offset our costs. We would be eternally grateful if others would consider doing the same by using the Support Us button located on the right-hand side of our home page below the mosaic.
Thank you for your continued support.
