IceDogs beef up blueline
The Niagara IceDogs added another piece to their defensive puzzle Wednesday, drafting Gabriel Eliasson with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 CHL Import Draft. The IceDogs elected to pass on their second round pick (63rd overall).
Eliasson is a 6-foot-7, 206-pound defenceman from Kungsbacka, Sweden, and was recently selected in the second round, 39th overall, by the Ottawa Senators in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
“Gabriel is a big defenceman with tremendous upside. He has many options in front of him but we are very hopeful he will be in an IceDogs uniform,” IceDogs general manager Wes Consorti said.
Gabriel was also the second overall pick in the USHL draft by Cedar Rapids and has a commitment to Michigan.
The towering defenceman will be 18 in September and played with HV71 in Sweden. He split time between their U18 and U20 teams, while playing majority of his games in the U20 Nationell League. In addition, he represented Sweden internationally at the U18 level playing in a total of 22 games.
The Hockey News described Eliasson as the meanest player in the 2024 NHL Draft who comes with limited offensive upside. Across 61 games during the 2023-2024 season he recorded a total of 13 points and 188 penalty minutes.
