The Niagara IceDogs fell behind early and never recovered as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Kingston Frontenacs in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday night at Leon’s Centre in Kingston.
The Frontenacs, coming off an impressive win Friday over Hamilton, improve to 19-9-3 with the win while the IceDogs drop to 9-18-1-1.
“Kingston is a very strong team but we battled hard and never quit,” IceDogs coach Billy Burke said.
Kingston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Lucas Peric netted his seventh of the season at the 6:07 mark. The Frontenacs added their second of the period when Francesco Arcuri scored with just 16 seconds to play. The goal came immediately following a five-minute power play for Niagara. The Frontenacs held a wide 22-7 edge in shots on goal.
The Frontenacs continued their dominance in the second with goals by Martin Chromiak and Arcuri less than two minutes into the period. Aidan Castle finally got the IceDogs on the board later in the frame before Chromiak potted his second of the game to give Kingston a 5-1 lead after two.
Pano Fimis fired his sixth of the season early in the third for Niagara to narrow the gap to 5-2 before Lucas Peric concluded the scoring for Kingston late in the game.
The Fronts peppered Niagara goalie Josh Rosenzweig with 52 shots while the IceDogs fired 28 shots at Kingston netminder Aidan Spooner.
“Rosey played outstanding for us and gave us a chance to hang around,” Burke said. “I’m proud of the guys.”
Niagara went 1-for-4 on the power play while Kingston was 1-for-6.
The IceDogs are back in action at home Tuesday, Jan. 25 when they host the North Bay Battalion.
Up to 500 fans will be permitted into Meridian Centre as per new government regulations as of Jan. 31. The IceDogs are holding a random lottery among season ticket holders for a chance for tickets for their home games Feb. 1, 4 and 20.
