IceDogs deal Tomasino for nine picks
The Niagara IceDogs traded a huge piece of their present Thursday in order to secure their future.
The IceDogs dealt third-year forward Phil Tomasino to the Oshawa Generals in exchange for a package of nine draft picks as well as a prospect.
The IceDogs picked up six second-round picks, one third- and two fourth-round choices ranging from 2020-2024.
The picks acquired are second, 2020 (Oshawa); second, 2021 (Kitchener); second, 2023 (Oshawa); second, 2023 (Guelph); second, 2023 (Kitchener); second, 2024 (Oshawa); third, 2024 (Windsor); fourth, 2020 (Flint) and fourth, 2024 (Oshawa).
“This was a difficult decision to make but the fact of the matter is we are building our future around 02-04s and younger, and we will never get a chance to acquire this amount of picks again,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said in a press release. “With the pick window closing to four years next season, I believe this is the last deal of this magnitude we will see in this league.
“The opportunity to add nine impact players for our future is something we couldn’t pass up. Not only have we now restocked our draft cupboard, we have multiple seconds in every year. This deal sets us back up for the future and gives us the tools to build a winner.”
The IceDogs also acquired 17-year-old defenceman David Gucciardi in the deal. Gucciardi is currently with the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League.
In 164 games as an IceDog, Tomasino scored 61 goals and 153 points. In the 2019-20 season, he is on pace to set career highs in goals and assists. Tomasino was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft (24th overall) to the Nashville Predators. He signed a three-year entry level contract with the Predators in October 2019.
