The Niagara IceDogs added to their already impressive stock pile of draft picks, dealing veteran centre Jake Uberti to the Mississauga Steelheads for three picks.
The IceDogs will receive Mississauga’s second-round selection in 2023, third-round pick in 2025 and fourth-round pick in 2025.
“It’s outrageous value,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. “We had gotten a little bit of interest from around the league. Teams were calling and we had to keep grinding and find the right fit for everybody.
“He’s a guy Mississauga is incredibly interested in bringing in and it got to the point where we said this is what we need to make it work and they stepped up to the plate.”
The trade was agreed upon Saturday and announced Sunday. Uberti, a 19-year-old native of Toronto, did not play in Niagara’s 5-4 win over Sudbury Saturday.
The deal leaves the IceDogs with a plethora of picks.
“We’re set up, quite frankly, probably stronger than anyone in the league,” Burke said. “It’s an impressive draft cabinet for sure.”
The IceDogs have a full slate of picks this year, minus a third-round pick. In 2023, they have three seconds and multiples in every round while in 2024 they have two second-round picks. In 2025, they own two seconds, two thirds and two fourths.
Uberti, who was drafted by the IceDogs in the fourth round (72nd overall) in 2018, had seven goals and 16 points in 22 games this season.
“It is always a difficult decision to move a player of Jake’s calibre, but we believe this move prepares us best for the direction we want to take our team,” IceDogs assistant general manager Brandon Currie said. “We can’t thank Jake enough for his four years of dedication to Niagara and we wish him nothing but the best in Mississauga.”
The OHL trade deadline is Monday at noon and Burke indicated he was working on another deal he expected to be finalized Sunday or Monday.
