IceDogs double Knights; Blackhawks edge Meteors; Bowling scores
Stephen Dhillon kicked out 30 shots as the Niagara IceDogs doubled the London Knights 4-2 in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday at the Meridian Centre.
Dhillon was at his best in the first two periods, turning back 24 of 25 shots over the first 40 minutes.
Niagara captain Johnny Corneil commemorated his 250th OHL game with his sixth goal of the season in the first period.
“He’s tremendous,” IceDogs coach Billy Burke said. “He’s the glue that keeps the room together making sure everyone is part of the team and there’s no cliques or anything. He’s a true leader and we’re lucky to have him.”
Niagara led 2-1 after one period on goals by Corneil and Akil Thomas. St. Louis Blues’ first round selection Robert Thomas scored for the Knights.
Oliver Castleman netted his sixth goal of the season for the only scoring of the second period to give Niagara a 3-1 lead after two.
The teams traded goals in the third with Max Jones scoring for the Knights while Kirill Maksimov netted his 17th of the year for the IceDogs.
Burke was impressed with the toughness his club displayed as both Kyle Langdon and Willy Lochead dropped the gloves.
“Ever since we picked up (Adrian Carbonara) Carbs, it seems everyone has gotten a little bigger,” Burke said. “It’s two examples of the guys are there for each other. It’s not a selfish team.”
The IceDogs, 14-9-3-2, are in Kingston Friday and Ottawa Saturday.
Blackhawks edge Meteors
Matt Maidens and Spencer Blackwell scored early in the second period as the Thorold Blackhawks edged the visiting Fort Erie Meteors 2-1 in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game Thursday at Thorold Arena.
Marco Lariccia replied for the Meteors.
Thorold outshot Fort Erie 35-22 as they improved to 10-12-3-2. The Hawks are home to Buffalo Saturday and in Pelham Sunday afternoon.
