IceDogs drop a pair
The Niagara IceDogs’ losing streak reached five games with a pair of losses this weekend.
The IceDogs dropped a 4-2 decision to the Mississauga Steelheads Saturday at home before being blanked 4-0 in Erie Sunday afternoon.
The IceDogs are now 5-10-2-1 and sit in third spot in the Central Division. They are seventh overall in the Eastern Conference with 13 points.
Saturday at home, the IceDogs trailed the Steelheads 3-1 late in the third when Lucas Theriault netted his third of the season to bring Niagara to within one. The Steelheads then scored into an empty net when Nick Isaacson fired home his third of the game at the 19:48 mark to conclude the scoring.
Kyen Sopa netted his 11th of the season for Niagara’s first goal.
Thomas Harley also scored for the Steelheads.
Tucker Tynan made 41 saves in a losing cause.
Head coach Billy Burke took some solace from a solid, overall effort.
“We’re definitely proud of the guys, the effort,” Burke said. “You want to win every game but you can certainly take a couple of moral victories in the way the guys responded.”
The IceDogs lost over-age defenceman Elijah Roberts to injury in the game.
“It’s not good news,” Burke said.
The injury came just two days following the trade of over-age defenceman Drew Hunter to the Otters.
The IceDogs were without Roberts, Mason Howard and Issac Enright, who is away at the U-17 Hockey Challenge, for the game Sunday in Erie which forced them to use forwards Akil Thomas and Ivan Lodnia on the blueline.
The Otters led 1-0 after one and 3-0 after two.
St. Catharines native Danial Singer scored for the Otters while Maxim Golod added a pair and Hayden Fowler one.
Christian Sbaraglia made 40 saves in net for Niagara.
The IceDogs will be at Wainfleet Arena on Tuesday for a free community skate. The teams will be practising at 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., after which fans can join them on the ice for photos and autographs.
The IceDogs are in Sudbury Friday and Hamilton Sunday afternoon. Their next home game is Saturday, Nov. 16 versus Windsor.
