The Niagara IceDogs’ losing streak reached four games following a 2-1 loss to the Sudbury Wolves in Ontario Hockey League action Friday in Sudbury.
The IceDogs last won Saturday, Oct. 23 when they topped the Mississauga Steelheads 4-2 at home.
Niagara coach Billy Burke felt the effort was a step in the right direction.
“Thought we turned a little corner tonight,” Burke said. “I think we are a better team now than we were last night. We did a better job advancing pucks through the neutral zone and getting in on the forecheck and playing in the offence zone.
“The guys played together and competed hard. Need to build on it for Sunday, though.”
Following a scoreless first period, the Wolves grabbed a 2-0 lead with goals from Chase Stillman at the 13:23 mark followed by Landon McCallum’s second of the year with less than two minutes remaining in the period.
Niagara finally got on the board less than a minute into the third period when Pano Fimis netted his third of the season.
The IceDogs had goalie Tucker Tynan on the bench for the extra attacker late in the game but defenceman Landon Cato was called for an interference penalty with 15 seconds to play.
“Unfortunately still too many penalties, including having to kill two separate five-minute majors,” Burke said.
Tynan made 33 saves in net while Mitchell Weeks kicked out 26 of 27 saves in goal for the Wolves and was named the game’s first star.
The IceDogs (4-7) are at Mississauga Sunday and home to Barrie Friday at Oshawa Saturday.
Ice cubes: Rookie goalie Joey Costanzo has been named to Team Canada’s roster for the U17 Capital City Challenge.
