The Niagara IceDogs picked up their first point in exactly one month, dropping a 5-4 overtime decision at Guelph Sunday afternoon.
The IceDogs, 17-24-5-1, last earned a point when they defeated the Mississauga Steelheads Jan. 23. The OT loss extends their winless streak to 14 games.
The point moved the IceDogs into a tie with the Kingston Frontenacs for the eighth and final playoff spot with 57 points in the Eastern Conference of the Ontario Hockey League. The Frontenacs own two games in hand, one of which they will play Tuesday versus the Ottawa 67s.
Niagara built a 4-2 lead heading into the third on goals by Cameron Butler (17), Jackson Doherty (5), Jonah DiSimone (8) and Mason Howard (7) before the Storm rallied with a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes. Daniil Chayka tied the score at 4-4 with just 13 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
Cam Hillis then netted the winner at the 2:10 mark of OT.
IceDogs head coach Billy Burke said the team will take the point, but were disappointed they let the win slip away.
“The point doesn’t feel very good right now. The guys really battled hard and wanted that win,” Burke said.
Burke said he optimistic the point will be a shot in the arm for his squad.
“I hope so,” he said. “Certainly heart breaking but I am definitely proud of their effort today.”
Keegan Stevenson, Danny Zhilkin and Fedor Gordeev also scored for the Storm.
Christian Sbaraglia made his first start in goal for Niagara since Feb. 8 and made 36 saves.
Owen Barrett and Nico Daws split the goaltending chores for the Attack, facing a combined 17 shots.
The IceDogs are back on the road Thursday in Barrie and Friday in Sudbury. Their next home game in Sunday, March 1 versus the North Bay Battalion.
