IceDogs drop fifth in a row
The Niagara IceDogs remain mired in their longest and deepest slump of the season.
The IceDogs dropped a 9-4 decision at Hamilton Saturday, less than 24 hours after an embarrassing 9-2 loss at home to Barrie. The IceDogs have now dropped five in a row and are 2-8 in their last 10 games.
“It’s tough to put into a text,” IceDogs head coach Billy Burke responded when asked about the loss. “It’s obviously discouraging getting another ugly result, especially since there were positives.
“It’s a tough stretch for us right now. No one feels sorry for themselves and the only way to turn things around is to stick together and keep working hard. Better days ahead.”
The IceDogs, 17-26-4-1, still hold down the eighth and final playoff in the Eastern Conference of the Ontario Hockey League.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-2 lead as Jan Mysak scored three times in the opening 20 minutes while Arthur Kaliyev added two and Issac Nurse one. Rookie Issac Enright netted his first OHL goal for the IceDogs while Jake Uberti added his 12th.
Nathan Staios, Mark Durante and Ryan Humphrey added to Hamilton’s lead before Elijah Roberts netted his first two goals of the season for Niagara in the third.
Christian Sbaraglia made the start in goal and permitted four goals on eight shots before being replaced by Andrew MacLean, who finished up permitting five goals on 19 shots.
Things don’t get any easier for the IceDogs this week who face the Midwest Conference-leading London Knights Tuesday at home at 7 p.m. in a make up game from December when the game was cancelled in the second period due to an injury to IceDogs goalie Tucker Tynan. The IceDogs also host Owen Sound Thursday and then travel to Sault Ste. Marie Saturday and Sudbury Sunday.
