Akil Thomas was at his best in his first game playing against the Niagara IceDogs.
The former Niagara captain collected four assists and was a plus-3 as the Peterborough Petes defeated the IceDogs 9-2 in Ontario Hockey League action Sunday in Peterborough.
The game resheduled from Dec. 14 following a serious injury to IceDogs goaltender Tucker Tynan the night before.
“Yes, definitely weird seeing Akil in different colours, but he is such a class act,” IceDogs coach Billy Burke said.
The IceDogs, who were coming off a split of home games Friday and Saturday, had a strong start and were tied with the Petes 1-1 after one.
“We knew it was gonna be a tough one but we came out flying and took the lead early,” Burke said. “Were tied 1-1 after 1 and only down 2-1 half way through the game.”
Peterborough took over the game with four goals in the second and another four in the third.
“Elite teams like the Petes can make you pay in a hurry though if you make a bad decision or lose your focus for a second out there and they keep coming in waves,” Burke said. “(It was a) good experience for our guys who will be back next year.”
Cameron Snow and Oliver Castleman scored for the IceDogs while Andrew Bruder assisted on both goals.
Zach Gallardi, Nick Robertson and Chisholm Declan had two goals each for the Petes while Jack York also scored.
Christian Sbaraglia made 49 saves in a losing cause.
The IceDogs were without captain Ivan Lodnia, who is week to week with a leg injury, as well as Jake Uberti and Ethan Sims. Former Pete Adrien Beraldo left the game in the second after being hit in front of the net.
The IceDogs, 16-21-4-1, are is seventh spot in the Eastern Conference and are back in action Thursday at home to Mississauga.
