The Niagara IceDogs dropped their third straight game Sunday, a 5-3 decision at Mississauga in Ontario Hockey League action.
The IceDogs find themselves in last place overall in the league with a 6-18-4-1 mark and nine points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Niagara seemed to have turned a corner earlier this month knocking off two of the top teams in the league, the Kitchener Rangers and Peterborough Petes, only to drop decisions to Erie and Sudbury last week before Sunday’s game.
The Steelheads jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Porter Martone that required a lengthy video review.
Kevin He knotted things up later in the first with his team-leading 14th of the season before rookie Luke Misa registered his 13th of the season for Mississauga later in the period.
Chas Sharpe increased Mississauga’s lead to 3-1 in the second before Mike Levin’s fired his ninth of the season for Niagara. Sharpe later added his second of the game to five the Steelheads a 4-2 lead after two.
Former Steelhead Zak Lavoie pulled Niagara to within one wth his 11th of the season in the third before Mason Zebeski netted an insurance marker for Mississauga.
The IceDogs peppered Steelheads goaltender Ryerson Leenders with 47 shots. Owen Flores faced 38 shots in goal for the IceDogs.
“We had 25 shots in the third, we made a push,” IceDogs coach Ben Boudreau said. “We had belief we could tie it up. We ran into a really hot goaltender. I believe we had our season high in shots tonight, but unfortunately the goals they scored were from in tight we needed to defend a little tougher in front of our net.”
The IceDogs went scoreless in six opportunities with the man advantage and are last overall in power play efficiency at 9.3 per cent.
The IceDogs are home to Ottawa Thursday, in Sudbury Friday and home to North Bay Saturday for their final game before the Christmas break. The team is then off until Thursday, Dec. 28 at Owen Sound.
