The Niagara IceDogs fell behind early and never recovered, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Owen Sound Attack in Ontario Hockey League action Wednesday night at Meridian Centre.
The loss drops Niagara’s record to 8-20-5-1, worst in the 20-team OHL. The IceDogs trail the Sudbury Wolves by nine points for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with one game in hand.
“I thought we came out flat in the first and didn’t compete hard enough in the net front areas and gave up two goals,” Niagara coach Ryan Kuwabara said. “We came out a lot better in the second and started to compete and were able to draw some penalties and gain some momentum.
“Overall I think we need to be ready on the drop of the puck and have some more urgency to our game.”
Ethan Burroughs scored just 1:19 into the game, the added his second of the period eight minutes later as the Attack took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Juan Copeland got the IceDogs on the board with his eighth of the season eight minutes into the second, but the Attack got that one back when Kaleb Lawrence netted his ninth off the year with only 34 seconds to play in the period.
Colby Barlow and Cedrick Guindon added goals in the third for Owen Sound.
Newcomer Christopher O’Flaherty dropped the gloves with Landen Hookey in the second period.
Owen Flores made 37 saves in goal for the IceDogs and took the loss.
The IceDogs are at Mississauga Friday and Peterborough Saturday.
