ONTARIO ERG CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 34th Annual Ontario Ergometer Championships will be held at Ridley College on Saturday, Feb. 29.
Entries are being handled through Regattacentral and cost $20, which includes the RCA and RowOntario seat fees.
Entry deadline is Feb. 21 and coaches and athletes are ask to check their entries to make sure athletes are listed at the right weight and are entered in the correct weight class.
New this year to the event are a mixed team relay for juniors after the masters racing and for seniors after the open racing. Each person does 500 metres and all competitors must be competitors in the regatta. The event is capped at 16 teams and sign up is on Regattacentral.
New Concept 2 machines will brought in for the event and will be sold for $1,250 at the conclusion of the championships. Contact Nancy Storrs at nstorrs@yahoo.com for sales. Already eight are spoken for and full name, address, phone number and email are required. Payment is by cheque or etransfer to Ridley Graduate Boat Club and is required by Feb. 23.
Several universities will be attending and athletes will be able to ask questions about to their future school and rowing careers. Brock University is helping with this year’s volunteer shirts and promoting their rowing camps (winter in Georgia and spring and summer in St. Catharines).
Mid-day at the championships will feature a technique and open discussion with the Niagara HUB coach, Greg Szybka, who is looking to show off the sport and also to recruit future high level rowers. Parents are welcome to see what it is all about and it is a great chance to ask questions and learn more.
REDS TOPS RAIDERS
Michael Conlon poured in 20 points as the Denis Morris Reds topped the Holy Cross Raiders 58-50 in Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior boys basketball action.
The teams were tied at 45 after three quarters before the Reds closed out the game on a 13-5 run to claim the win.
“Full credit to our defence late in the game,” said DM coach Randy Conlon. “We got the job done when we needed it most and we were able to knock down some big shots late, as well.”
Noah Honsberger scored 17 for the Reds while Dylan Maltby added 11 and Thomas Davidson chipped in with eight.
The Raiders were led by Reuben Eshuis with 17, including 15 in the first half, followed by Sam Trivieri with 10. Sebastian Ayala and Bruce Deluca each had nine.
WELLAND TIGERS HOCKEY
Minor peewees tie Garden City
The Welland 91.7 Giant FM/Country 89 Tigers hockey team looked nothing like its normal self as it salvaged a 2-2 tie with the Garden City Falcons in minor peewee A divisional play in Welland.
The Tigers’ skating speed and quality passing were largely missing compared to two previous victories versus the Falcons in which they outscored them 16-2.
Scoring for Welland were: Tanner Cutler on assists from Miller Miotto and Colby Franchetti; and, Jordan Wright thanks to assists from Franchetti and Miotto.
Replying for Garden City were: Owen Crabbe with a helper from Colby Taylor-Moody; and, Zachary White with an assist from Joshua Legresley.
Welland is 20-0-3 in league play.
Major peewees trump Aces
Blake Turner and Tyler Ray each scored as the Welland Telus Tigers jumped out an early lead and held on for a 2-1 win over the West Niagara Flying Aces in major peewee A action in Grimsby.
Recording assists for Welland were Ray and Jordan Raso.
Jordan Spratt, assisted by Nathan Poehlman, would spoil Gavin Beck’s shutout bid with only 12 seconds left in the game.
Welland is 11-7-4 in league play.
