REDS SPLIT PAIR
The Denis Morris Reds split a pair of recent games, falling 56-51 to Notre Dame and edging Holy Cross 47-46.
Fresh off their Tribune title over the weekend, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish kept things rolling with a 56-51 win over the Reds in Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior boys basketball action.
“We battled hard for four quarters, but at the end of the day we got beat by a better team today,” Reds head coach Randy Conlon said. “I thought our zone was pretty effective, for the most part, but they have some kids who can knock down shots – credit to them.”
Anthony Cimino led the Irish with 16 followed by Andrew Zezella with 13 and Shamar Campbell with 12.
Leading Denis Morris with 16 points each were Noah Honsberger and Zubeer Liban. Michael Conlon tossed in 10 and Brian Schkabari added nine.
Notre Dame held a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, 32-26 at the half and 45-41 heading into the final frame.
In the later game, the short-handed Reds edged the Holy Cross Raiders 47-46.
Honsberger led the way for the Reds with 12 while Liban tossed in 11 and Nathan Charette and Schkabari each had eight.
Adrian Wasnak led the Raiders with 11. Isaiah Amio and Sam Trivieri each had six.
GYMNASTICS QUALIFIER
The Niagara Falls Lighting Gymnastics Club is hosting a provincial qualifier for Levels 3 to 9 Saturday and Sunday at the Americana Resort and Conference Centre on Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls.
The competition runs Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students. The event is the Lightning club’s biggest fundraiser of the year.
GIRLS ALL-STAR NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
Girls high school basketball coaches are reminded to submit their nominations for players to take part in the Girls Basketball All Star Games Wednesday, Feb. 13 at St. Catharines Collegiate.
The game was oginally scheduled for Tuesday, but the gym wasn’t available.
The top 20 game will be at 7 p.m. and the Top 10 game will be at 8:15 p.m.
STRONG GAME FOR SMITH
Welland Notre Dame grad Miranda Smith had a strong performance to lead the Brock women’s basketball team to a 63-47 victory last week over the Waterloo Warriors.
Smith netted five three-pointers to finish with 19 points and she also added three rebounds and two assists. Melissa Tatti scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, added six assists and a steal for Brock.
The Badgers improved to 7-7 with the victory.
