TWENTY FOR PICTON
Maddie Picton netted 20 points to lead the Niagara Prep girls basketball team to an 80-48 victory over Southwest Academy in Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association play Wednesday at A.N. Myer.
Other leading scorers for Niagara were Sarah Ti-Biasu (17), Jayme Foreman (13), Andrea Hebert (11) and Julia Colavecchia (11)
Southwest Academy was led by Natsuki Szczokin with 11 points.
BROCK’S TOP ATHLETES
Wrestler Hannah Taylor and men’s basketball player Cassidy Ryan were named Brock University’s athlete of the week.
Taylor, a third-year sport management student, went 4-0 to win the 59-kilogram division at the Guelph Open.
Ryan, a fifth-year forward from Mississauga, scored 21 points during a 101-100 victory in Guelph and had 28 points and 18 rebounds in a 98-93 loss to Windsor.
DESCHATELETS SECOND
Niagara Falls native Richard DesChatelets Jr. placed second in the 97-kilogram men’s division at the Guelph Open.
DesChatelets is an A.N. Myer alumnus.
WELLAND ATOMS OUSTED IN QUARTER-FINALS
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers major atom A hockey team’s defence of its International Silver Stick Championship ended when it failed to advance to the quarter-final round.
Welland opened with a 4-3 loss to the Littleton Hawks with goals going to Julian Belcastro, Colby Franchetti and Mason Risto.
In a 7-2 win over the Westchester Vipers, Tanner Cutler and Belcastro each netted two goals and Townes Bestward, Carson McComber and Hudson Kipp adding singles.
Welland then nearly upset the fourth-ranked Woolwich Wildcats but had to settle for a 2-2 draw as Woolwich managed to tie the game with 1:56 remaining. Brennen Hagar and McComber scored for the Tigers.
In their return to regular season play on Monday night the Tigers extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 6-2 win over Fort Erie. McComber scored twice and Franchetti, Cutler, Hagar and Belcastro added single tallies as Welland improved to 18-2-3 in league action. Brentin Porter and Owen Kelly responded for the Meteors.
TIGERS STREAK SNAPPED
Tristan Alford scored the game’s only goal and Hunter Lozecki recorded the shutout as the Glanbrook Rangers snapped the Welland Telus Tigers major peewee A hockey team’s 17-game unbeaten streak in Niagara District Peewee Doherty league play.
Welland, which shares an identical record with Stoney Creek atop the standings at 15-3-7 with three regular season games remaining, rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Fort Erie with Preston Wainwright, Quinten Hemauer and Eli Moormann providing the offence. Ashton Lanthier scored the lone Meteors goal.
BELLO SHARP IN GOAL
Goalie Kaleb Bello had a strong game as the Welland Youngs Insurance Tigers minor atom hockey team tied the Pelham Panthers 1-1.
Scoring the lone goal for the Tigers was Matteo Vallerian, assisted by Kalen Sumbler and Cade Bovine.
TIGERS NOVICES CLINCH FIRST
The Welland Mike Knapp Ford Tigers novice A hockey team clinched first place in Niagara District Hockey League action with a 5-3 victory over Pelham.
Ethan Rousseau scored twice in the victory and singles were notched by Liam Seguin, Dylan Wood and Noah Rousseau. In the Welland net for the win was Brady Matte.
In a 2-0 win over Glanbrook, Seguin and Jordan Hotham scored and Jackson Macleod recorded the shutout.
In a 1-1 tie with Lincoln, Seguin netted the lone Welland goal.
