RED RAIDERS TAKE GOLD
The Niagara Falls Red Raiders under-15 girls basketball team recently brought home a gold medal from MUMBA basketball tournament in Markham.
“The girls had some great team chemistry throughout the tournament,” head coach Mark Federinko said. “They stayed focused, had great court vision and made quality decisions. Truly a great stepping stone as we push forward with our season.”
In round-robin play, the Falls defeated Mississauga Monarchs 43-22, Stoney Creek Newman Youth 58-16, York North Avengers 42-31. In the final, the Red Raiders defeated Brantford CYO 34-30.
Leading the way for Niagara Falls were Keira Federinko, 47 points and six rebounds; Hannah Bourdon, 27 points and 24 rebounds; Justine Veltman, 19 points and 26 rebounds; Amye Buchan 17 points and 18 rebounds; Amy Edwards, 13 points, 18 rebounds; Tori Wiggins, 10 points and 16 rebounds; Hanna Dino, 13 points and 11 rebounds; Riley Hutton, 13 points and five rebounds; Jorja Allen, eight points and six rebounds; Vanessa D’Abramo, six points and three rebounds; and, Kate Battell four points and one rebound.
Injured and unable to play was Alexandra Watson. Other coaches are Sean Hutton and Andrea Wiggins.
ONTARIO JUNIOR WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Beamsville grad Jessica Tillmanns placed first in the women’s 62-kilogram division at the Ontario Junior Wrestling Championships in London.
The Brock wrestler defeated Simi Jayeoba of MAC Wrestling Club 17-6 by technical superiority in the final.
Other Brock winners included: Garette Saunders at 57 kilograms; Samantha Romano at 50 kilograms; and, Tejvir Boal at 86 kilograms.
Lily (Nicole) French was second at 76 kilograms and Bobby Narwal was third at 74 kilograms.
MAJOR ATOMS WIN THREE
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers major atom A hockey team improved to 21-2-3 in Niagara District Atom Doherty league play with wins over Glanbrook (9-5), Stoney Creek (5-2) and Garden City (7-0).
Against Glanbrook: Brennen Hagar netted three; Colby Franchetti and Tanner Cutler two each; and, Jonah Bello and Carter Kelly each notched single tallies against Glanbrook. Cameron Schweitzer, Marcus Perri, Sebastian Lucia, Kane Bazinet and Brett Macqueen replied for the Rangers
Hagar would score twice against Stoney Creek with Matteo Mete, Julian Belcastro and Franchetti rounding out the scoring in the 5-2 win. Deson Moriarity scored both goals for Stoney Creek.
Evan Corriveau recorded his third shutout of the season as Welland skated past Garden City 7-0 with Franchetti recording a natural hat trick and Belcastro, Cutler, Kelly and Townes Bestward also scored.
TIGERS EDGE WARRIORS
The Welland Telus Tigers battled back to defeat the Stoney Creek Warriors 3-2 in major peewee A hockey action.
Quinten Hemauer scored twice for Welland and Eli Moormann netted the game-winner. Stoney Creek’s Joshua McNulty scored twice.
Welland finished its regular season at 16-3-7.
TIGERS PEEWEE SWEEP STONEY CREEK
Led by four goals from Jordan Raso, the Welland 91.7 Giant FM Country 89 Tigers minor peewee hockey team defeated Stoney Creek 3-1 and 4-2.
Noah Bovine scored twice and Mcquillan also scored.
TIGERS FINISH UNBEATEN
The Welland Mike Knapp Ford novice A hockey team (23-0-4) completed an undefeated regular season with a pair of shutout victories.
In a 4-0 victory over Stoney Creek, Mackenzie Welychka, Ethan Rousseau, Ryan Rousseau and Dylan Wood scored and Jackson Macleod netted the shutout.
In an 8-0 victory over St. Catharines, Blake Hudak netted a hat trick, Wood scored twice, Liam Seguin, Welychka and Ryan Rousseau added single goals; and, Brady Matte recorded his team’s 23rd shutout of the season.
TIGER ATOMS FINISH STRONG
The Welland Youngs Insurance Tigers minor atom hockey team concluded its regular swaps with a 5-3 win over Niagara Falls and a 5-1 victory versus Port Colborne.
Kyle Zenga, Mackenzie Taylor, Matteo Valleriani, Ethan Fortier and Cade Bovine scored versus Niagara Falls.
Scoring for the Tigers against Port Colborne were Kalen Sumbler, Austin Bovine, Lucas Homan, Taylor and Joseph Boychuk.
In an earlier 6-1 victory against Port Colborne, Austin Bovine scored twice and singles were potted by Cade Bovine, Valleriani and Blake Marton.
