Jan. 30 Niagara College sports report
The Niagara College Knights women’s volleyball team improved to 9-5 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18 and 25-16) sweep at Fanshawe (4-10) last Wednesday.
Leading point getters for Niagara were Montanna Taylor (14), Natasha Desjardins (11), Abbey Gooder (10) and Hannah Cowie (8). Taylor recorded five kills, five service aces and four solo blocks. Desjardins had 11 kills, Gooder had seven and Cowie and Annastasia Droppert had six apiece.
Niagara hosts Humber (14-0) Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Mohawk (8-7) Saturday at 1 p.m.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara College’s men’s volleyball team was in tough, dropping a 3-0 (17-25, 16-25 and 15-25) decision on the road to Fanshawe last Wednesday.
Niagara fell to 8-6 with the loss while West-leading Fanshawe improved to 12-2.
Top scorers for Niagara were Elijah Bugiardini (8), Dallas Melnick (8) and Tyler Carmichael (6). Elijah Bugiardini had seven kills, Carmichael had six and Melnick recorded five.
Niagara hosts Humber (9-5) Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Mohawk (8-7) Saturday at 1 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Niagara women’s basketball team thumped winless Sheridan (0-12) on the road last Friday to improve to 6-5 on the season.
Sheridan kept the game close, trailing 13-10 after one quarter and 27-23 at the half before the Knights took control by outscoring the homeside 43-20 in the second half.
Top performers for Niagara were: Jamira Rousseau with 15 points and five boards; Taryn Mitchell with 14 points, seven steals and six rebounds; Eden Ferraro with 12 points and 12 rebounds; Diana Saoud with 11 points; and, Janee Harrison with seven points and seven boards. Molly Taylor contributed 10 rebounds in the victory.
“I’m pretty happy with our performance. Defensively, we were very good,” Niagara head coach Chris Rao said. “Offensively, we need to continue to move the ball and continue to work on our fundamentals. We got good performances out of Eden and Diana which was great to see. We need to continue focusing on what matters for us to play winning basketball, but we responded well after a tough week.”
The Knights face a stiff test Wednesday at 6 p.m. against unbeaten Humber (12-0).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Niagara’s men’s basketball team saw its OCAA record drop to 7-6 following a 95-94 road loss to Sheridan (9-5) last Friday night.
“This loss stings,” Niagara head coach Phil Mosley said. “We battled back hard to give ourselves a final shot for the game. Our defensive effort in the fourth quarter was exceptional and I believe the lessons we can take away from this game will be invaluable going into the final playoff push.”
Sheridan led 31-24 after one quarter before Niagara rallied to lead 46-45 at the half. The home team then grabbed the lead by outscoring the Knights 30-20 in the third quarter.
Top performers for Niagara were: Delroy Grandison with 26 points and 10 rebounds; Ethan Alino-DelaCruz with 21 points; Kenneth Reckley with 12 points and six boards; Kennan Larmand with 12 points; and, Khayden Stewart with nine points.
The Knights are back in action Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Humber (8-5).
