Jeffery highlights Niagara track roundup
Five members of the Thorold Elite Track Club represented Ontario at a special dual meet between Ontario and Quebec.
Chase Owen, Faith Dyck, Kyjiah Slowley, Charlotte Ciceran, and Ayla Laing helped Team Ontario win gold over Team Quebec for the second straight year.. The meet is held annually and rotates between Toronto and Montreal/Sherbrooke.
Niagara athletes have been performing well at the first few Athletics Ontario indoor track and field championships held in Toronto Jan. 28-29 (relays and combined events), Feb. 5 (Ontario Masters Championships), and Feb. 10-11 (U18 and pen age group championships).
Below is a list of individual and relay medalists from Niagara clubs.
Bringing home golds were: Samuel Jeffery, Athletics Niagara, in U20 men’s heptathlon with a new provincial record of 4,656 points; Owen Robins, Thorold Elite Track Club, in U18 boys weight throw with a Canada-leading throw of 20.05 metres; Andrew Armstrong, Thorold Elite Track Club, in masters shot put and 60 metres (40-45 age category); Lauren Thomas, Athletics Niagara, in U18 girls pentathlon; Coco Van Nynatten, Thorold Elite Track Club, in U18 girls weight throw; Barron Walker, Carson Walker, Jacob Montoya, and Jackson Meade, Runners Edge, in U16 Boys 4×400-metre relay; Eric Klein, Tyler Doornbos, Jaden Dunlop, and Arik Rae, Thorold Elite Track Club, in open men’s 4×200-metre relay; and, Eric Klein, Tyler Doornbos, Tristan Christie, and Max Myers, Thorold Elite Track Club, in open’s men’s 4×400-metre relay.
Garnering silver medals were: Andrew Armstrong, Thorold Elite Track Club, in masters weight throw (40-45 age category); Victoria Massoom, Thorold Elite Track Club, in U18 girls triple jump; Josee Regala, Niagara Olympic Club, in U16 Girls tetrathlon; Coco Van Nynatten, Thorold Elite Track Club, in U18 Girls shot put; Faith Dyck, Tola Adewumi, Kyjiah Slowley, and Layla Hall, Thorold Elite Track Cklub, in U16 Girls 4×200-metre relay; and, Evan Blake, Chase Larsen, Deagen Hallett, and Chase Owen,
Thorold Elite Track Club in U16 Boys 4×800-metre relay.
Earning bronze medals were: Mikayla May, Thorold Elite Track Club, in open women’s triple jump; Owen Robins, Thorold Elite Track Club, in U18 boys shot put; Tyrese Gibson, Arik Rae, Sammy Tonnies, and Fenway Breckels, Thorold Elite Track Club, in U18 boys medley relay; Braeden Brouwer, Jaden Dunlop, Tyler Doornos, and Elijah Bayne, Thorold Elite Track Club, in open men’s medley relay; and, Brianna Vermue, Charlotte Vermue, Natalie Saunders, and Rachel Vallier, Runners Edge, in U20 girls 4×400-metre relay.
The next event on the track and field calendar is the Canadian Masters Championships at the end of February and the U16 and U20 Championships during the first weekend in March.
