June 12 Local Sports: Crossley track; Grummett and Trivieri golf tourneys; IceDogs schedule
E.L. CROSSLEY SHINES IN TRACK AND FIELD
The 65-member E.L. Crossley track and field team had another excellent season winning the overall Zone 3 title and the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association’s overall and girls overall championships.
Eighteen of the team’s members advanced from regionals to the Ontario Federation School Athletic Association championships at Guelph University.
Crossley came home with one medal won by Kate Knafelc. She earned a silver in the open women’s 2000-metre steeplechase and also placed 18th in the 800-metres and 4×400-metre relay.
Other Crossley athletes who recorded personal bests or placed top 24 at OFSAA were: Tessa Jeffery, fifth in the junior girls 3000 metres, 12th in the 1500 metres and 18th in the open women’s 4×400-metre relay; Gwen Cudmore, 10th in junior girls high jump; William Hamilton, 12th in junior boys pole vault, Aidan Clarke, 16th in senior boys pole vault; Carter Teal, 17th in senior boys 200 metres and 18th in the 400 metres; Jacob Martin, 17th in junior boys pole vault, Olivia Van Vliet, 18th in the midget girls 4×100-metre relay, and 18th in the open women’s 4×400-metre relay; Jenna Mergl, Jayne Stefaniuk and Gracie Young, 18th in the midget girls 4×100-metre relay, Sofia Labricciosa, 18th in the open women’s 4x400m relay; Derian Free, 18th in the 2000-metre open men’s steeplechase, Grace Brownlee, 19th in midget girls pole vault; Zachary Pasma, 20th in senior boys pole vault; Nathan Freure, 22nd in midget boys pole vault, Adrian Papez, 23rd in senior boys pole vault; and Crystal Coyne, 24th in junior girls pole vault.
“These results are the best in Ontario in their event,” track coach Maryann Mergl said.”This was all accomplished without the use of a track this year because of reconstruction. Pretty amazing!”
TYLER GRUMMETT GOLF TOURNEY
The annual Tyler Grummett Open will be played Sunday, June 23 at Thundering Waters in Niagara Falls.
Registration will begin at noon followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
The $125 registration fee includes BBQ lunch, first beer, 18 holes of golf with cart, prizes, post-round wine tasting, dinner and prizes.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Distress Centre Niagara.

25TH ANNUAL TRIVIERI GOLF TOURNEY
The 25th Annual Trivieri Charity Golf Tournament will be played Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Royal Niagara Golf Course with registration at 7 a.m. and tee off at 8 a.m.
Last year, $18,000 was raised for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, bringing the total to $250,000 raised for the foundation since the tournament’s inception. This year, the event is supporting Hospice Niagara and organizers are hoping to attract 216 golfers.
The $95 registration fee includes golf, cart, BBQ, prizes, and a $25 receipt from the Hospice Niagara. The Trivieri family will host a BBQ for the golfers and their families beginning at 2 p.m. at the Niagara Corporate Business Centre (old Foster Wheeler Building) at 509 Glendale Ave. in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

ICEDOGS ANNOUNCE SCHEDULE
The Niagara IceDogs have announced their schedule for the team’s 13th season in Niagara.
The team will open the 2019-2020 season at home to the Sudbury Wolves on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. followed by a tilt against the Mississauga Steelheads on Friday, Sept, 20 at 7 p.m. in Mississauga.
