June 7 area: Athletics move into first; IceDogs sign a pair; Golf Ontario results
The St. Catharines Athletics moved into first place with an 8-3 win over the Oakville Buzz Thursday night in Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A action.
The victory was the second in as many nights for the A’s who improved to 7-3 at the halfway point of the regular season.
Nick Damude had another solid game in goal with 39 saves.
Rylee St. Onge and Brayden Mayer collected two goals each for St. Catharines while Carter Zavitz, Connor Aquanno, Saul Van Der Zalm and Jake McNabb added singles.
The A’s host Whitby (5-2-1) Saturday at 7 p.m.
ICEDOGS SIGN TWO
The Niagara IceDogs have signed draft picks Cameron Snow and Josh Rosenzweig to standard player agreements.
Snow, a 2018 seventh-round Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection pick, is a 5-foot-8 centre who played the 2018-2019 season with the midget prep team at The Hill Academy collecting 101 points (46 goals, 55 assists).
Known for his speed, Snow combines his skating, ability to make smart plays to put together highly skilled game that translates on the scoresheet. He also displays a strong work ethic and willingness to put in the work to make plays happen.
“This is a very exciting signing for us,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. “Cameron is an extremely dynamic player whose skill level is off the charts. He had a great camp last year and followed it up with a tremendous season. Cameron will fit in great with our style and adds to our up-and-coming young group.”
Rosenzweig was a 2019 sixth-round selection. The goaltender played the 2018-2019 season with the Toronto Red Wings Greater Toronto Hockey League where he posted a 2.44 goals against average and. 883 save percentage.
“I am thrilled to be able to have Josh sign,” Burke said. “This is a guy who was at the top of our goalie list all season long and we couldn’t believe we were able to draft him where we did. To be a winning team in this league, you need high-end goaltending. With this signing, we have added even more young goalie depth to our group. Josh has a bright future with us and I couldn’t be happier to make this signing official.”
Rosenzweig recently represented team GTHL Red at the OHL Gold Cup, where his team finished second, recording a shutout in the tournament.
“I am so honoured and proud to have officially signed with the Niagara IceDogs,” he said. “This is an awesome moment and a surreal experience. A special thanks to my family and all the people who have helped me get this far. The work starts now.”
Rosenzweig is one of 12 U17 goalies invited to participate in the Program of Excellence’s Goaltending Camp, taking place in Calgary this week.
OHL AWARDS
The Ontario Hockey League hosted the 2018-19 OHL Awards Ceremony in the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Great Hall in Toronto.
IceDogs winger Jason Robertson was officially awarded the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as the top scorer of the Ontario Hockey League for the 2018-19 season. In 62 regular season games, Robertson scored 48 goals, and collected 69 assists, totally 117 points.
Robertson becomes the first Niagara IceDogs player to win the award.
GOLF ONTARIO NEWS
Lookout Point’s Joe Miszk fired a 74 at the Spring Lake Golf Club in Stouffville to tie for third in the senior men’s division at Golf Ontario’s Champion of Champions event.
Other local in the senior men’s division were: Twenty Valley’s Mark Hunermund, tied fir 31st with an 81; St. Catharines’ Bernie Bodogh, tied for 43rd with a 83; and, Cherry Hill’s Michael Reynolds, tied for 58th with an 86.
In the men’s division, Lookout Point’s Tyler Tyminski placed 28th with a 77.
In the senior women’s division: Lookout Point’s Sharon Montgomery-Greenwood tied for 21st with a 99; Twenty Valley’s Karen Vamplew was 29th with a 103; and, Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Yolanda Henry was 30th with a 104.
Competing in the Ontario Men’s Better Ball Championship at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club, St. Catharines’ Jaret Chipman and Brandon McGregor tied for 14th with a 71.
Other locals in the field included: Port Colborne’s Sandy Billyard and Miszk, tied for 32nd with a 74; and, St. Cattharines; Mitchell and Hayden Molen, tied for 45th with a 76.
Competing in the Junior Boys Spring Classic at the Brockville Country Club, St. Catharines’ Ben MacLean (72-78-77=227) tied for 19th and Lookout Point’s Matthew Martel (74-76-78=228) tied for 27th.
Competing in the Junior Girls Spring Classic at Wooden Sticks in Uxbridge, Lookout Point’s Kayla Burke (79-87-78=244) tied for 20th.
