Junior B hockey; Jean Vanier girls basketball; bowling
The St. Catharines Falcons made it six wins in a row with a 9-4 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game Friday night at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
The Falcons improved to 18-4-0-2 and moved into first place with 38 points, one more than the idle Caledonia Corvairs. The Falcons have played two more games than the Corvairs.
“That was a good game by our guys, overall,” Falcons coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “We can still tighten a few things up, but we dictated the pace of the game which is key to our success each and every game.”
St. Catharines grabbed a 3-1 lead after one period and increased their lead to 7-3 after two.
Michael Davies paced the Falcons with three goals while Tanner Ferreira added a goal and four assists. Romeo D’Intino, Carson Eden, Lukas Smilsky, Tyler MacArthur and Arber Xhekaj added singles.,
Alex McAteer, Luca Mazzo, Mike Masotti and Kevin Weaver-Vitale replied for the Meteors.
The Falcons are in Caledonia Saturday. St. Catharines has defeated Caledonia in all three of their previous matches this season.
Canucks 5 Panthers 2
Owen Green had two goals as the Niagara Falls Canucks defeated the visiting Pelham Panthers Friday at the Gale Centre.
Matthew Caruso, Garrett Downie and Frank Pucci also scored for the winners.
Thomas Young and Noah Caperchione had the Pelham goals.
Hawks tie Junior Canadians
The Thorold Blackhawks and Welland Junior Canadians played to a 3-3 tie Thursday at Thorold Arena.
The Blackhawks built a 3-1 lead before the Junior Canadians rallied with two goals in the third period to tie the game.
James Guest had two goals and an assist for the Hawks while Trevor Neumann added one.
Alexander Damenski, Tanner McEachern and Noah Bollert replied for Welland.
Charles Grimard made 37 saves in goal for Welland.
Anthony Tremonte kicked out 24 shots for the Hawks
Thorold, 9-11-2-2, is off until next Thursday when they host Caledonia.
Lynx perfect through three games
The Jean Vanier Lynx senior girls basketball team have won their first three games at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations A (OFSAA) playdowns in Timmins.
The Lynx advanced to the semifinals Saturday with a 54-26 win over Ste. Famille in the quarter-finals Friday afternoon.
Julia McPhail had a big game with 20 points, including six three-pointers while Isabelle Sinclair added eight.
The Lynx got off to a strong start with a 42-11 win over Quinte Christian.
Sinclair scored 11 and Alexandre Hebert 10 in the win which saw nine players hit the scoresheet.
The Lynx followed that up with a 48-18 win over Lester B. Pearson as Alyssa Arcand scored 14 and Morgan McAvoy eight.
