Junior hockey report: IceDogs top Steelheads; Riverhawks edge Shamrocks

The Niagara IceDogs extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Mississauga Steelheads Thursday in Ontario Hockey League action.
The IceDogs improved to 10-4-2 and sit atop the Central Division with 22 points.
Mississauga grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Cole Carter.
The IceDogs responded in the second when Kyen Sopa netted his ninth of the season.
Andrew Bruder and Ben Jones scored for Niagara less than a minute apart early in the third.
Cole Schwindt was thwarted on a penalty shot by IceDogs goaltender Stephen Dhillon in the third period.
Dhillon continued his strong play kicking out 35 shots for the win.
The IceDogs are at Mississauga Friday.
JUNIOR C
The Niagara Riverhawks defeated the visiting Hespeler Shamrocks 4-3 in overtime Thursday night at the Gale Centre in Provincial Junior Hockey League action.
The teams exchanged first period goals as Derek Pymont opened the scoring for the Riverhawks at the 29-second mark with their first shot on net. Hespeler tied the game at 16:57 when Darrian Morgan scored.
The Riverhawks jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second on goals by Dante Massi and Tyler Seguin before Hespeler answered back with a goal midway through the period.
Hespeler scored the tying goal at 12:28 before Josh Urbshott scored the overtime winner two minutes into the extra frame.
“I think we fell asleep a few times during the game but we finished strong and found a way to win,” Riverhawks head coach Tim Barath said. “We have two more big games this weekend and we need to play a full 60 minutes to be successful.”
The Riverhawks travel to Grimsby Friday night to take on the Peach Kings and Sunday head to Port Dover. Their next home action is next Thursday night when they host the Haggersville Hawks.
