Kenney comes through again
Casey Kenney just keeps on winning.
The 17-year-old student at Sir Winston Churchill padded her already impressive resume by capturing the junior girls division Saturday at the 73rd Annual Walt McCollum Niagara District Champions of Champions golf tournament at the St Catharines Golf and Country Club.
Kenney, who golfs out of Sawmill, fired an 80. Emma Leitch of Peninsula Lakes was second with a 93.
The win caps an impressive run for Kenney, who also won at the 2021 tournament held in the spring and was the U19 overall girls champion on the Niagara District Junior Golf Tour this summer.
“I started with a Champion of Champions win and it would be nice to finish with a Champion of Champions win, so obviously it was a goal of mine,” Kenney said.
Kenney had no problem admitting she enjoys winning.
“Who doesn’t like succeeding at something they’re passionate about?”
Kenney had an inconsistent start to her round.
“I started on 11 and almost got a birdie and then followed that by a bunch of bogeys,” she said. “I don’t know what was going on. The greens are so fast it was unreal and then I finally figured it out and I was on a roll for a good part of it which helped me out a lot.”
Kenney gave credit to her friend, fellow Sir Winston student Sam Cormier, who acted as her caddie.
“It made it a lot less stressful,” Kenney said.
Kenney said Cormier wasn’t there to offer golf tips, but rather to hang out and keep her company.
“She’s not a golfer and I like being in total control,” she smiled.
Kenney said this win wasn’t as easy as the 2021 title.
“It was a little bit more stressful than last year’s Champion of Champions because there was six girls rather than two and I don’t really know the girls. I don’t know what their skill level was so I guess I was a little bit stressed,” she said.
Kenney won easily Saturday but that wasn’t her primary concern.
“I strive to do my best as possible and I didn’t do too bad with that today,” she said. “It definitely could have been better.”
