K of C Free Throw Competition: Complete results
Mazen Yagubi would be the first to admit his free throw shooting leaves something to be desired when he plays for the St. Catharines Rebels under-14 squad in Division 1 of the Ontario Basketball League.
“In games, I’m not really good, but I guess here I am doing pretty good,” the 13-year-old said Saturday.
Here for the Grade 8 student at Westdale, who will be attending Sir Winston Churchill in the fall, was Holy Cross and the district competition of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition.
After hitting 13 of 15 free throws at the council level, Mazen hit 23 or 25 free throws to win the age 13 boys division Saturday and advance to the provincial championships in Waterloo on Feb.23. Mazen tied Canadian Martyrs student Isaak Pino-Martinez, the winner of the boys age 10 division, for the best score of the day.
Mazen hit his first 10 shots, missed two in a row, and then captured the title by sinking his final 13 shots.
“Normally I am just thinking about my score and not focusing on my shot,” he said.
Mazen attributes his strong shooting to the coaches on his travel basketball squad
“They help me by working on my fouls shots and working on my technique.”
He plays point guard for the Rebels and describes himself as more of a shooter than a driver.
