Konkle, Swinson place sixth
Owen Konkle and Shannon Swinson both came up short in their quest for a medal at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games Friday.
Konkle, who Tuesday ran the Special Olympics 100-metre heat in a time of 12.13 to record the third-fastest time, placed sixth in the 100-metre medal final.
The former Beamsville and District Secondary School student qualified to compete at the Canada Games by placing first in the 100 metres and 200 metres at Athletics Ontario trials earlier this spring at York University. He is one of six sprinters, including Niagara Olympic Club member Swinson, who are representing Ontario.
Gabriel Dupuy won the gold followed by Bradyn Giraudier of Saskatchewan and his brother Kyle Giraudier of Saskatchewan.
Swinson, a 22-year-old Beamsville resident, played sixth in the female 100-metre final with a time of 15.48.
Joy MacLachlan of Nova Scotia won the gold in a time of 14.02 followed by Regan Hofley of Manitoba (14.34) and Vesta Orchard (14.84).
Swinson, who was the 2019 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations’ silver medalist in the 100-metre and 800-metre girls intellectually disabled division qualified for the Games by winning the 100 metres and 200 metres at the Ontario trials at York University. Not only did she cross the line first in the two events but she recorded personal bests in both races.
Swinson and Konkle will both be running in the 200-metre final Saturday.
