Lacrosse roundup: A’s off to perfect start; Spartans back to. 500
The St. Catharines Athletics are off to a strong start with a pair of wins in their first two games this season.
The Athletics opened the 2019 Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A campaign with an 11-4 win at Brampton followed by a 9-5 victory at Six Nations Monday.
Sam LeClair paced the A’s with a pair of goals over Six Nations while Kealon Pilon, Brayden Mayea, Tyler Brown, Rylee St. Onge, Aaron Ward, Jake McNabb and Bradley Fannell added singles.
Austin Paddy made 37 saves in net for the win.
Former St. Catharines netminder Troy Holowochuk took the loss for the Arrows.
Brown had a big game versus Brampton with five goals and two assists while LeClair added a goal and five assists. McNabb scored twice while Pilon, Kyler Kilour and Connor Aquanno rounded out the scoring.
Nick Damude earned the win in goal for the A’s.
“Real proud of the guys,” A’s general manager Jeff Chcoski said. “It’s nice to start the season 2-0. It’s real tough to win games on the road and to get these first two is really important for our program.
“There is a real good buzz around us right now and the guys are excited for the home opener.”
The Athletics square off versus the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves (0-1) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Jack Gatecliff Arena in their home opener. The A’s also host Burlington Saturday at 7 p.m.
JUNIOR B
The Spartans are back to .500 at 5-5 after a pair of wins over the long weekend.
Saturday, the Spartans topped the London Blue Devils 12-9 as Connor Aquanno Mitchell Geoffroy, Blair Pachereva and Sam LeClair collected two goals each. Singles came off the sticks of Tyler Kolodka, Blake Halliday, Jacob Edmands and Ben Katzman.
Sunday at the Thorold Arena, the Spartans defeated the Welland Generals 14-9 as LeClair had four goals and seven assists and Aquanno six goals and two assists. Owen Bachelor, Mitchell Geoffroy, Carter Geoffroy and Kolodka added singles.
Peter Hrynik led Welland with six goals while Dylan Dekoe, Ethan Wellings and Bailey Fournier-Higgins also scored.
The Spartans are home to the Niagara Thunderhawks Thursday at 8 p.m. and at Six Nations Friday.
North Stars 8 Thunderhawks 7
The Niagara Thunderhawks fell to 3-4-1 with a loss at Owen Sound.
Nathan Maloney and Devin Napoloen scored twice each for the Thunderhawks while Connor Watson, Bryce Benham and Brandon Sveda added singles.
The Thunderhawks are at Thorold Thursday at Guelph Friday.
