Local sports report: Locals named to Commonwealth Games; River Lions; Welland hoopsters; bowling
Two local athletes have been named to Canada’s track and field team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Australia.
St. Catharines native Mo Ahmed, a Niagara Olympic Club member, will represent Canada in the 5,000 metres and St. Catharines Paralympian Kyle Whitehouse, a Niagara Regional Athletics member, will wear Canada’s colours competing in the T38 100 metres.
A total of 46 athletes were selected by Athletics Canada for the Games that will take place April 4-15.
“Athletics Canada has put together a strong and talented team that features a number of Commonwealth Games veterans and athletes who have taken great strides in our NextGen Program,” head coach Glenroy Gilbert said. “We are going to the Gold Coast to compete and to compete well. It’s an early start to the season for Canadian athletes, but we are going down there to do a job and that’s to perform.”
Athletics competition will be held at Carrara Stadium, except for the race walk and the men’s and women’s marathon.
MAGIC TOP RIVER LIONS
The Niagara River Lions’ road woes continued Wednesday night with a 112-104 loss to the Moncton Magic in National Basketball League of Canada action.
The River Lions’ road record now sits at 4-8. Combined with a home record of 4-2, Niagara’s overall record is now 8-10. They trail the London Lightning (11-5) and the St. John’s Edge (9-5) in the NBL’s Central Division.
Niagara led 29-20 after one quarter, trailed 48-43 at the half and then led 80-78 heading into the final quarter before pulling out the victory.
Omar Strong came off a one-game suspension for an altercation in a home game versus London and scored a game-high 20 points. Also contributing for the River Lions were: leading scorer Marvell Waithe, 18 points and eight boards; Jaylon Tate, 16 points, Sam Muldrow, 14 points; and, Connor Wood, 12 points off the bench.
Al Stewart topped the Magic with a triple double consisting of 23 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Other top scorers for Moncton were Terry Thomas (23), Jeremy Williams (22) and Anthony Anderson (13).
Niagara shot 45 per cent from the floor as compared to 45.9 per cent for Moncton. The Magic out-rebounded Niagara 46-37 in the game.
The Magic and River Lions will do it all over again Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.
LOCAL HOOPSTERS SHINE
Two Welland Warriors and Notre Dame basketball players were selected to play in the recent Canletes All Ontario All-Star Game at Humber College.
Chloe Peters tied for the team-high in scoring with 15 points and Jamira Rousseau netted eight points. Both players are in Grade 10 and helped Notre Dame to a fourth-place finish at the OFSAA AAA championships.
The group of 20 players represented some of the best senior female basketball players in Ontario and was chosen by Canletes based on performances in high school play.
