Low goes Low at Twenty Valley
Trevor Low prevailed against the young guns at the third stop of the Niagara Men’s Golf Tour this past Sunday at Twenty Valley.
The 54-year-old Twenty Valley member carded a one under par 71 to record a one-shot victory over Cherry Hill’s Ryan Dyck, St. Catharines Golf and Country Club’s Morgan Daly, Cherry Hill’s Jaret Chipman and Monthill Golf and Country Club’s Aiden Gavey, the defending overall champion.
“I kept in touch with the tour even when I wasn’t playing on it and now the quality has gotten so much better,” he said. “The top end of the tour is really stacked and to win at my age against some of those young punks is pretty satisfying.”
He is one year removed form being able to play at Golf Ontario senior events.
“I can play to play as a senior to be honest with you.”
Low has been playing golf off and on for the past 20 years and is a four-time club champion at Twenty Valley. This is his second year on tour. Last year, he finished sixth overall on the tour and had one runner-up finish.
The Beamsville native had a simple explanation for his success Sunday.
“It was windy and I hit 16 greens in regulation.”
The key moment in the round came on the par 3 13th hole when he hit his tee shot into a divot on the 14th tee and managed to salvage a par when he hit his approach shot to within a foot of the cup.
The Canadian manager for a German building envelope firm didn’t feel playing on his home course gave him much of an advantage.
“I don’t put a whole lot of stock into it. I suppose the comfort is certainly there but again I felt it was an uphill battle against some of those guys. There’s a lot of college players and former college players that have some really good resumes. To my mind, that kind of outweighs the home course knowledge.”
Winning on the the men’s tour is a nice boost of confidence for Low.
“Club championships are coming up for everyone in the next couple of weeks and that is always a highlight. There is also the men’s tour and I am holding out until next year when I turn senior age.”
Completing the top 10 were: Bridgewater’s Nolan Vankalckreuth (73); Glencairn Golf Club’s Jeffrey Clarke (73); Twenty Valley’s Caleb Shorthouse (73); Bridgewater’s Damien Stehling (74); and, St. Catharines Golf and Country Club’s Brandon McGregor (74).
So far this season there has been a different winner at each event.
Next stop on the tour is Aug. 18 at Port Colborne.
