Lynx capture SOSSA A championship
The Jean Vanier Lynx cruised to a SOSSA A senior girls basketball title with a pair of lopsided victories Thursday.
The Lynx defeated Guido de Bees 52-24 in the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association final after topping Cayuga 37-8 in semifinal action.
The Lynx host the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship Nov. 21-23. Games will be played at Vanier and the Meridian Centre in Pelham.
“The first game was a bit easier. We started off 17-0 I think,” Lynx co-coach Trish Poulin said. “The girls started off really strong and it was in front of a buy-out crowd too so they had that adrenaline behind them.
“The second game was a bit tougher. They were a better opponent.”
In the opener, Andrea Hebert paced the Lynx with 16 points while Isabelle Sinclair added 13.
Sinclair followed up with a 23-point performance in the final while Hebert added 19.
Poulin said the school bid for the tournament figuring they would be in a good position to contend.
“We had this plan because you have to bid for OFSAA a few years before,” he said. “When we had Isabella in Grade 9, we went to OFSSA and again in Grade 10. Isabelle, Alyssa (Arcand) Ariel (Wendling) and Karly (Jolin), we wanted to give them an OFSAA at home. Haven’t played OFSAA at home since Confederation and Ridley in 2010 and 2011.”
Poulin has high hopes of medalling.
“To bring OFSAA home is super exciting. We’re excited to be going, not just because we are hosting, but because we are SOSSA champs. We definitely wanted that so we could show the seeding committee we deserve a good spot going into the tournament.
“Our goal is to be playing on Saturday (for a medal). To win it would be amazing, but we can’t deny the competition that is coming.”
Other members of the Lynx are: Mia Wendling, Rose-Arielle Philome, Lynn Gateka, Corrynn Parker and Kim Brinker.
