Mackenzie does double duty with River Lions
Kimball Mackenzie’s role with the Niagara River Lions continues to expand.
The team captain recently signed a deal to help the team defend its Canadian Elite Basketball League title and on Wednesday it was announced the 28-year-old Oakville native had been hired in a full-time role as the team’s brand and community ambassador.
It is the first such position in the CEBL and a role the Grimsby resident was interested to pursue.
“I grew up in Oakville and it is not a big basketball town. I think that the Niagara region has a world of potential in terms of the population and the love for the game. I want to be a part of trying facilitate that in some way, be a role model for young kids, bring some excitement about basketball to Niagara and help weave the River Lions’ brand into the community. There’s a lot of things that go into it but the main one is the fulfilment of giving back in some way.”
He is most looking forward to one aspect of the job in particular.
“It’s visiting schools and seeing young, impressionable students be excited.
Prior to accepting the role, Mackenzie ran PA Day clinics for the River Lions. His previous experiences will also aid in the new job.
“In playing so many years and training, I have a base of knowledge that I can go to. I think coaching this past season (with the Niagara College women’s team) will help me in this role as well. I’m taking it day by day and learning.”
Mackenzie feels the position is an important one for the River Lions.
“It’s because the community is ultimately what makes the organization go. If nobody is at the games, the organization doesn’t go. Having basketball grow in Niagara and getting more kids excited about playing basketball, that will pay dividends down the road for the River Lions.”
Mackenzie had already started in the position, attending an assembly at Richmond Street School today.
“Reaching out to schools and getting out there is going to be Step No. 1. From there, hopefully skill clinics, camps and youth basketball development will follow. Come September and in the immediate future, it is going to be me being out in the community at events, schools and so on and so forth.”
River Lions president Michelle Biskup is thrilled to welcome Mackenzie into the River Lions’ front office.
“This marks a significant step forward in our commitment to making a lasting impact on the Niagara community year-round,” she said. “Kimbal’s leadership on the court is unmatched and now he will bring that same passion and dedication to this new role, helping us grow our brand, engage with fans and support local initiatives. This role not only enhances our presence beyond the season but also reinforces our mission to lead on and off the court.
