Marauders come close at AAA SOSSA
The A.N. Myer Marauders senior girls basketball team saw its season come to an end Thursday with a 78-62 loss to host Westdale in the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association AAA championship game.
“It was an unfortunate end to an amazing season. The girls fought right until the final buzzer and never gave up in the final game,” Myer head coach Kate Harper said. “It’s tough as a varsity team playing against senior teams, but all year our team rose to the challenge. A big thank you to our graduating players Mya Pierini, Carly Casciano, Jenna Saddler, Madison Douma and Cheyenne Lee for their contributions to our program.”
No game sheet was available from the final game.
The Niagara Region High School Athletic Association Zone 3 champions advanced to the final with a 62-59 victory in the semifinals over NRHSAA Zone 4 champion Eden.
Against Eden, the Marauders built quarter leads of 24-13, 41-27 and 51-44.
Scoring for Myer in the semifinal victory were: Emma Vendittelli 16; Pierini 15, Saddler 9; Casciano 8; Maia Walker 6; Sophia Kotsanis 3; Elizabeth Cook 2; and, Ava Walker 2.
Replying for Eden were: Shorleigh Burrows 31; Kate de Vries 8; Madelaine Templeman 6; Ashlynn Caverly 4; Iye Ogunkeye 4; and, Annika Rigby 4.
“I was extremely proud of the team. They have been an amazing group to coach,” Eden head coach Jonathon Thorpe said. “Today we came back from an early deficit and showed an incredible amount of character to fight back and make it a game. We fell just short but we have nothing to hang our heads about.”
The Niagara Catholic Athletic Association champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell 76-45 to Westdale in the semifinals.
Westdale built quarter leads of 19-12, 34-19 and 56-38 to record the victory.
“The girls played very well,” Notre Dame coach Loris Lucchetta said. “The coaches are proud of their efforts and are looking forward to next season.”
Scoring for the Irish were: Camilla Moscato 15; Lila DiPietro 9; Ava Briggs 6; Nicole Dixon 4; Lauryn Briggs 3; Olivia Bitman 2; Abbey Grande 2; Cassie Orr 2; and, Grace Papineau 2.
