The Niagara Juel girls basketball team’s league record sits at 5-3 after it split a pair of games this weekend on its home court at the Pelham Community Centre.
Niagara opened with a 69-62 triumph over Oakville Vytis and then dropped a 50-40 decision to the Brampton Warriors.
“We lost to Brampton 50-40 and the score speaks for itself. Not much scoring,” Niagara head coach Frank Keltos said.
He was much happier with his team’s effort against Oakville.
“It was a great team game coming back from a week of COVID protocols. We moved the ball well and hit the open man.”
In defeating Oakville, Niagara built quarter leads of 17-10, 37-23 and 52-46.
Leading the way for Niagara against Oakville were: Brookelyn Keltos (Sir Winston Churchill), 25 points; Hannah Bourdon (Greater Fort Erie), 14 points and nine boards; Sarah Hurley (E.L. Crossley), 11 points and eight rebounds; and Yemi Oladipo (Sir Winston Churchill), nine points and 10 rebounds.
Niagara led Brampton 10-8 after one quarter before the Warriors built quarter leads of 25-22 and 37-27.
Top performers for Niagara versus Brampton were: Oladipo, 10 points and five rebounds; Hurley, six points; Bianca Sestili (Denis Morris), five points; and, Keltos, four points.
NIAGARA JUEL PREP
The Niagara Juel Prep girls basketball team had a winless weekend on its home court.
Niagara lost 58-35 to the Niagara Girls Basketball Academy, 67-45 to Oakville Vytis, 73-47 to the Brampton Warriors and 53-39 to the Mississauga Monarchs.
“The girls battled hard this weekend, I’m proud of each athlete’s efforts and contributions. The flow of offence is coming along and we are handling ball pressure a lot more calmly,” Niagara Juel Prep coach Kristy-Anne Wytenburg said. “Unfortunately it wasn’t a weekend shots wanted to fall, but we’re hungry for more games in Windsor March 26 and 27.”
Top Niagara performers against the NGBA were: Ashlynn Caverly (Eden), nine points and five rebounds; Isabella Brenzil (E.L. Crossley), eight points and eight boards; Cadence Seredine (Port Colborne), six points; Jenna Sandel, (Lakeshore Catholic) four points and seven rebounds; Maia Walker (A.N. Myer), four points; and, Anna Deliyannis (Eden), two points and seven boards.
Leading the way for the NGBA were: Jordyn Wheeler, 16 points and 21 rebounds; Reese Bolibruck, 12 points and seven boards; Sam Dino, seven points; and, Emma Vendittelli, six points.
Performing well for Niagara against Oakville Vytis were: Brenzil, 15 points and 10 boards; Jenna Saddler (A.N. Myer), 10 points; Maya Kolbinson (Port Colborne), six points; Deliyannis, four points and eight boards; and, Sandel, three points and 11 rebounds.
Topping the stats sheet for Niagara against Brampton were: Sandel, 13 points and five rebounds; Deliyannis, 12 points and five boards; and, Brenzil, eight points and eight rebounds.
