GOLDEN EAGLES TOP SOSSA VOLLEYBALL
The Thorold Secondary School Golden Eagles junior girls volleyball team captured the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association A championship with a 3-0 sweep of Hamilton District.
Thorold advanced to the final with a 3-0 sweep of Mckinnon Park from Caledonia in the semifinals while Hamilton Christian advanced to the final by knocking off E.L. Crossley from Fonthill.
The win capped an excellent season for Thorold. The team went unbeaten against A schools in Niagara Region High School Athletic Association play and then didn’t drop a set in the playoffs on the way to winning the NRHSAA Zone 4 crown.
In the overall Zone 4 final, Thorold recorded a 3-0 victory over the St. Francis Phoenix, the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association champion.
The Golden Eagles were successful thanks to hard work.
“Often times during the season, the girls would ask for practices on off days,” said Domenic Faragalli, who coached the team along with Christy Graham. “They were dedicated and hungry to practice and learn more.”
Team members included Mya Conway, Emily DeRoos, Reagan DeRoos, Grace Drummond, Julia Garrah, Shyanne Laundry, Shauntelle Marchan, Hope Nicholson, Emma-Li Sikhanxay, Aaliyah Uppal, Laura Walton, Regan Wier and Natalie Yarnell.

TIGER PEEWEES TIE LINCOLN
The Welland Telus Tigers (1-0-3) hockey team wrapped up the round-robin portion of its Niagara District Major Peewee A Pool A playoffs with a 2-2 tie against Lincoln on Monday night.
It was Welland’s third tie in four games places and places it in a three-way draw for first place with Garden City (2-1-1) and Glanbrook (2-1-1) as each team now has five points.
Carter Kipp and Kaleb Seguin powered the Tigers offence with Bryson Farr putting in a fantastic effort between the pipes to preserve the stalemate. Alex Marrese and Kian Bartkiw replied for the Blades, who were eliminated from championship contention with a 1-1-2 record.
ICEDOGS DONATE $18,000
The Niagara IceDogs announced the Niagara Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society will be receiving $18,000 from the live auction of the game-worn specialty pink jerseys from the 7-2 win Jan. 19 against the Flint Firebirds. All funds raised from the jersey auction will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society; the IceDogs cover the cost of jersey production. The Canadian Cancer Society raised an additional $4,000 through coin collections between periods, the sale of merchandise at their booth on the concourse, and through our second intermission chuck-a-puck fundraiser. In total, the Canadian Cancer Society raised $22,000 at the game.
“We [Niagara IceDogs] are so proud to be donating such a significant amount of money to the Canadian Cancer Society in Niagara, from our specialty jersey auction.” IceDogs owner Bill Burke said. “The work done with the CCS, to provide our region with extensive research and innovative treatment is invaluable to our community. To have received such strong support from our own fanbase for a national organization, like the Canadian Cancer Society, shows the importance of their work to our community.”
