TIGER MIDGETS TOP NIAGARA
The Welland Tigers minor midget A hockey team won the Niagara District A division championship four-point series 4-0 over the Grimsby Peach Kings.
Welland won the first game at home 6-3 and then won the second game 2-1 in Grimsby when captain Noah Carl scored in overtime.
Team members are Carl, Brodie Morabito, Mason Mastroianni, Maxwell Naso, Nimna Mendis, Spencer Main, Dylan Elsie, Noah Abdelmaksoud, Conner Bekker Thompson, Ian Kish, Jackson Duerden, William Harper, Ryan Drapeau, Quinn Sarginson, Myles Chew and Zachary Perna. Affiliated players are Cooper Armstrong, Mason Teather and Kaden Falardeau.
The coaching staff included head Coach Mike Bray, assistant coaches Kirk Patterson and Taylor Whitty, trainer Marc Kirchmayer and manager Damian Alfieri.
NIAGARA JUEL PREP WINS TWO OF THREE
The Niagara JUEL Prep girls basketball team pushed its record to 8-4 by winning two of three games last weekend.
Niagara defeated the Muskoka Royals 67-57 and Ottawa Elite 62-56 before losing 59-54 to the Scarborough Lady Blues.
Leading the way for Niagara versus Muskoka were: Madalyn Weinert, 16 points and nine rebounds; Allison Addy, 14 points and seven rebounds; Jordan Wilton, nine points and two rebounds; Thea Lawson, seven points and four rebounds; and Ella O’Connor, seven points and six rebounds.
“It was a well-rounded team effort with 10 of 11 players making it on the scorebook,” head coach Sue Sentance said.
Performing well for Niagara against Ottawa Elite were: Weinert, 21 points and eight rebounds; Brookelyn Keltos, 10 points and two rebounds; Addy, eight points and six rebounds; and, Wilton, seven points.
Niagara started the game in four trouble which left four players on the bench for the majority of the first half.
“The girls figured out how to avoid further calls and once again we saw a total team effort contributing to the win,” Sentance said.
In the loss to Scarborough, Niagara was led by: Weinert, 23 points and 10 rebounds; Addy, 11 points and four rebounds; Bianca Sestili, six points; and, Vienna Vercesi, five points and 10 rebounds.
“It was a hard-fought game today, but we came up short in the end,” Sentance said. “We will look to improve on our finishes and our focus as we struggled to execute our plays down the stretch.”
Sentance was happy with her team’s defensive performance.
“The team came together on defence and worked extremely hard while pressing this team, creating a total of 26 turnovers for the Lady Blues.”
WELLAND SPORTS AWARDS TICKETS
The Welland Sports Promotion Committee’s 47th Annual Sports Awards Night will be held Friday, April 5 at the Casa Dante Lodge on Lincoln Street in Welland.
Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner starts at 6:45 p.m. and the awards ceremony will follow the dinner.
Tickets are $20 and are available at the Welland Community Wellness Complex at 145 Lincoln Street.
