MVPs Pappin and Succar highlight NCAA football all-stars
Notre Dame’s Jacob Succar was named the offensive MVP of the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior football league.
Notre Dame’s Jacob Succar and Saint Paul’s Jarrel Pappin were named the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association’s senior football offensive and defensive MVPs in voting by the league’s coaches.
Blessed Trinity running back Isaac McAlonan finished second in offensive MVP voting and Saint Michael receiver/kick returner Riley Hart was third. Other players receiving votes were Saint Paul fullback Pappin, Saint Francis wide receiver John Serrano and Denis Morris wide receiver Michael DiMaurizio.
Succar, a Grade 11 student, was a touchdown machine for the Fighting Irish this season.
“Jacob is well-deserving of the honour,” Notre Dame head coach Tim Bisci said. “He is a good athlete and it will be exciting to see how good he can be next year and possibly the year after.”
There were many factors that made Succar a great running back.
“He has great speed and ability, he hits the whole so quickly and is deceptively tough,” Bisci said. “You think he will run around you and he runs through you. He is only in Grade 11 and will only get better.”
Notre Dame defensive lineman Gerrid Holton, Blessed Trinity cornerback Vince Fracchioni and St. Francis defensive tackle Michael Sharpe tied for second in voting for defensive MVP. Also receiving votes were linebackers Riley Lyons from Denis Morris and Andre Lafleur from Lakeshore Catholic.
Pappin, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound punishing hitter from the middle linebacker position, is a key piece of the NCAA and Niagara champion Patriots.
“Words cannot describe what Jarrel means, not only to the defence, but our team,” Saint Paul coach Mark Antonelli said. “He is tenacious and aggressive, he always has his nose around the ball but, most importantly, he is a wonderful human being who shows empathy and support to his teammates when they struggle and it the first person to show encouragement when they succeed.
“His loyalty to the Saint Paul program has rubbed off on the rest of his teammates.”
Antonelli has also learned a thing or two from Pappin.
“Jarrel has taught me as a coach how to loosen up and relax in tight situations,” he said. “We at Saint Paul are proud of him.”
