NCAA football report Oct. 2
The defending Niagara Catholic Athletic Association champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 21-3 victory over the Saint Paul Patriots.
“We need to capitalize on our chances. I felt we left a lot of points on the field. We had chances to break the game open and let it get away. We are young and need to keep learning but when we get a chance we have to make good on it,” Notre Dame head coach Tim Bisci said. “We had three dropped first downs on simple throws, a dropped touchdown and a 48-yard pick 6 called back on an undisciplined penalty. We need to be better as the season grows long.”
Contributing to the victory for the Irish were: Everett Hemauer with a six-yard TD pass from Ben Tsanoff; Nick Longo with 23-yard and 11-yard TD passes from Ben Tsanoff; Brodie Bevacqua with three converts; and, Colten Kizlyk with an interception.
The Patriots fell to 1-1 with the loss.
PHOENIX 28 GATORS 0
The Saint Francis Phoenix senior football team evened its NCAA record at 1-1 with a 28-0 shutout of the Lakeshore Gators.
Contributing to the win for the Phoenix were: Mitchell Flook, Trent Dobson, Sadiekie Hayden and Keishaun Johnston with touchdowns; Cameron Mepham with three TD passes; and, Carter Dmytrow with a pair of sacks.
“I was very impressed with our defence, especially our linemen getting great push, disrupting the offensive backfield and getting good pressure on the QB,” Phoenix coach Mark Johnson said. “Offensively, there’s still some work to do on execution and penalties, but overall a solid effort running and throwing the ball.”
REDS 20 RAIDERS 0
The Denis Morris Reds improved to 1-1 in NCAA play with a 20-0 victory over the Holy Cross Raiders.
Contributing to the win were: halfback Sammy Kramar with a 35-yard catch and run major; Luca Marcone with a touchdown on a punt return; Timmy Oke with a rushing major; Sammy Kramar with a two-point convert on a pass from Lincoln Marsh-Hall; and, fumble recoveries by Natan Chmielewski and Travis Palmer.
Reds head coach Steve Roach was impressed with his team’s energy and enthusiasm.
“We played hard on every play. There were 12 players getting to the ball on defence and we have lots of weapons on offence.”
The Raiders fell to 0-2 with the loss.
“Holy Cross started off with a bang in the first quarter. Then the tide turned when QB and free safety Noah Kugler was ejected for targeting,” Raiders head coach Gerry DiSanto said. “Holy Cross fought to the end.”
