Conrad Czarnecki has come out of nowhere to become a valuable member of the St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves.
The 21-year-old Hamilton native last played competitively in Poland, but when that didn’t pan out long term, the centre-back returned home looking for a place to play.
“I know a lot of the guys and I came out because I love the game,” the Bishop Ryan gradate said. “I stuck with it through the winter.”
Czarnecki quickly turned heads in the winter workouts.
“I was very impressed with his skills,” Roma technical director Davide Massafra said. “He’s a great asset for our group.”
Czarnecki has continued his outstanding play now that the regular season has started for the Wolves.
“We didn’t expect him to be a starter but coach Federico (Turriziani) decided to give him a chance and he was the best player on the field in the first game in Mississauga and also scored in London,” Massafra said. “He’s played very well. We’re very happy.”
Czarnecki is thrilled to be off to a good start with his new team.
“It’s a great feeling. Confidence goes from 50/50 to I know my job, I know my place on the team and I know what I have to do,” he said.
Still, Czarnecki feels the best is yet to come.
“I haven’t played at the serious level in three years so I’m finding my rhythm,” he said. “I know I still have a lot to offer because as the season goes on I’m going to get better and find the rhythm I used to have.
“I have a lot of work to do and a lot to improve on.”
Czarnecki isn’t closing the door on perhaps playing pro again.
“Maybe. Right now I don’t want to look at stuff like that. One day at a time and wherever it leads me, it leads me. That’s where I put my mind now at this point.”
The Wolves, coming off a 3-1 loss at Unionville Milliken SC last week, square off versus North Toronto Nitros at Tim Horton’s Field in Hamilton Saturday at 7:15 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Canadian Professional Soccer League.
