Niagara College Oct. 4 sports report: Soccer, golf, men’s basketball
The Niagara College women’s soccer team’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association record sits at 2-3-1 after the squad split a a pair of games last week.
The Knights lost 3-0 to St. Clair (3-1-2) and tripled Lambton (0-8) 3-1.
Scoring for Niagara were Mia DiPasquale, Ashley Phillips and Kayla Kistindey.
“We played well against a good St. Clair team on Saturday but came up short,” Niagara head coach Rob Lalama said. “Sunday against Lambton, we dominated. We were happy to pick up three points in this very tight West Division.”
Niagara has a pair of home games this week on Thursday against Fanshawe and Saturday against Redeemer. Thursday’s game starts at 6 p.m. and is dog bandana giveaway night. Saturday’s game starts at 3 p.m. Both will be played at Young’s Sportsplex.
MEN’S SOCCER
Niagara’s men’s soccer team also split a pair of games last week falling 9-0 to St. Clair (4-1-1) and blanking Lambton (0-8) by a score of 2-0.
Rudi Marinas and Nate Smyth scored for the Knights who have a record of 1-5.
“It has been a difficult season so far in terms of translating the positive energy and effort at training into positive competition results. Saturday’s performance and result was a painful low point,” Niagara head coach Frank DeChellis said. “The guys know they need to make the most of these last five games and Sunday’s was a good start. Our rookies are learning a lot, the hard way, but they are learning.”

GOLF
Eight teams competed in Niagara College’s annual Knights Invitational Sept. 27 at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls.
Niagara finished in sixth place, just a few shots out of the medals, in the final event before the OCAA Provincial Championships.
Ethan Siebert led the team with a score of 78 and Aidan Mcvey was close on his tail shooting a 79.
“Their play is just starting to ramp up and they are gaining momentum as they head toward OCAAs,” Niagara coach Adam Steinschifter said.
The OCAA championships will be played at the Ambassador Golf Course in Windsor on Oct. 2-4.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Niagara’s men’s basketball team enjoyed an excellent road trip to the East Coast.
“We had an amazing trip to Halifax this past weekend going 3-0 against competitive programs from the ACAA(Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association),” Niagara head coach Phil Mosley said. “We enjoyed the East Coast culture and used this first trip to build our team chemistry and work on our systems both offensively and defensively”
Niagara opened with a 98-64 victory over the University of Kings College led by Raheem Dennis with 18 points and Reggie Williams with 12.
In the second game against Mount Saint Vincent University, Niagara won thanks to 21 points from Dennis, 15 from Ethan Alino Dela Cruz and 13 by Mason Donaldson.
The Knights completed their trip by defeating Mount Allison (New Brunswick) 94-76. Alino Dela Cruz led the way with 23 points and Khayden Stewart added 10 .
