Niagara College soccer showcase set for Wednesday
The top high school soccer players in the region will get a chance to strut their stuff at the Ninth Annual Niagara College Soccer Showcase Wednesday indoors at Youngs Sportsplex.
The girls game will start at 6 p.m. followed by the boys contest at 8 p.m. The players were nominated by their respective high school coaches.
Niagara College men’s assistant coach Rino Berardi spawned the idea for the tournament nine years ago.
“Every year the enthusiasm for the event grows, the crowd increases and the quality of the game is elevated accordingly,” Berardi said.
Niagara women’s coach Rob Lalama is big fan of the game.
“Our showcase is a clear example and reminder that the health and quality of youth soccer in Niagara is very good,” Lalama said.
Knights men’s coach Frank DeChellis said it is a team effort to put on the event.
“This is a big event Niagara College Knights soccer and our own Knights student-athletes are involved in delivering the event. Other departments are involved, including Athletics and Student Engagement, Enrolment Services, Recruiting, Sports Management, Broadcasting and the Print Shop. Youngs Sportsplex is a major partner of our program and it’s nice to feature their facility. The game itself is a chance for the best local players to play together for once and show their stuff in an all-star game type of environment.”
