Niagara Generals Week 3 Report
The Niagara Generals under-14 squad fell to 0-3 in Ontario Fall Football League play following a 32-0 loss to Cambridge (2-1).
Sienna Cavey and Oliver Kuebek had stellar games for Niagara, leading the defence in tackles.
“With every good play, it seemed the next play would just not go our way,” coach Bruce Macrae said. “This coming week, we will be making adjustments, some on offence and some on defence, hopefully opening the door for our first win of the year. The bottom line is we came out against a strong Cambridge team that was ready to play.”
The Generals are at the Scarborough Thunder (0-3) Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
UNDER-12
The Niagara Generals under 12 football team pushed its record to 3-0 in OFFL action with a 45-0 thumping of the York Lions.
“Our players executed well and followed our game plan. We have a great bunch of athletes out this year and they work well together across all positions,” coach Kent Wakem said. “We head to Sarnia to play the Sturgeons this week and by all accounts they are a well-coached team and an offensive juggernaut.
“We are expecting a fantastic game. This past week brought to light some issues with our points after touchdown that we need to work on and resolve. Against a team like the Sturgeons we cannot afford to leave those points on the table.”
Against York, Spencer Macrae returned a kickoff for a TD in the beginning seconds of the game to fire up the Generals. The offence kept rolling in the first half, recording three more majors and a one-point convert. The defence had a strong opening half and didn’t allow a first down.
In the second half, Niagara’s offensive line dominated the trenches, helping record three majors and a two-point convert on a reception. Meanwhile the Generals’ defence finished the game with a shutout.
Scoring for the Generals were: Macrae with three touchdowns; Dyami Maphar with a pair of TD receptions; single majors by Isaiah Benjamin (reception) and Layken Crawford; and converts were recorded by Lox Raducanu on the ground and Isaiah Benjamin in the air.
UNDER-10
The Niagara Generals under-10 football team fell to 1-1 in OFFL action with a 26-6 loss to Cambridge in West Division play.
“The first half our defence struggled to contain the run game and we went down 20-0 by the half,” coach Andrew Lewis said. “We struggled to get our offence moving up field but managed to get a big run by Jake Durdan-Brewster, who scored our only touchdown of the game.”
Durdan-Brewster had a big day on the ground and was named the Generals’ offensive MVP of the game.
Niagara’s defence played better in the second half and held Cambridge to a single major. The team picked up a few sacks, led by Greyson Maffei and Anthony D’Andreamatteo.
“Unfortunately we weren’t able to capitalize and get much going offensively,” Lewis said.
Next up for the Generals is a Saturday home game at Kiwanis Field at 11 a.m. against the Brantford Bisons (3-0).
