Nov. 12: Weekend junior hockey roundup: IceDogs lose; Junior B results; Riverhawks edged
The Niagara IceDogs came up inches short in a 4-3 loss at North Bay Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.
The turning point of the game was in the second period when Philip Tomasino scored what looked to be the go-ahead goal to break a 2-2 tie. Instead, the goal was reviewed and correctly disallowed on an offside.
The Battalion took advantage and scored twice in the period to take a 4-2 lead into the third.
The IceDogs battled back with a late goal by Ben Jones to make it 4-3 but could not get the equalizer.
Drew Hunter and Daniel Bukac also scored for Niagara.
Brad Chenier, Brandon Coe, Braden Henderson and Matthew Struthers had the goals for North Bay.
Rookie Christian Sbaraglia made his OHL debut in goal for the IceDogs and turned aside 21 shots in the loss.
The IceDogs, 10-6-3, are home to the Hamilton Bulldogs, 10-8-1, Thursday before visiting Erie Saturday and Oshawa Sunday.
JUNIOR B
Falcons 9 Meteors 1
Carson Edwardson, Xavier Drummond, Kyle West and Dakota Miskolczi scored two goals each as the visiting St. Catharines Falcons topped the Fort Erie Meteors Saturday. Jacob Roach added a goal and three assists while Christian Girhiny and Andrew Somerville chipped in with three assists each.
Newcomer Noah Blakely was held off the scoresheet. The Falcons acquired the forward from the Welland Junior Canadians in a three-way deal that saw Carson Eden and Noah Perlic shipped to the Niagara Falls Canucks and forward Matthew Maidens dealt from Niagara Falls to Welland.
“He scored 18 goals last year so he can chip in (offensively),” Falcons coach/general manager Frank Girhiny said of Blakely. “The good thing about him is his speedy and strength. He’s a puck hound and because of his skating, he’ll be able to keep the pace up.”
Blakely, 19, is a Welland native. His older brother, Cam, is a former Falcon.
Noah Desmarais replied for the Meteors.
The Falcons, 12-3-0-1, are in Hamilton Monday and home to the Kilty B’s Friday.
Panthers 4 Meteors 2
The Pelham Panthers improved to 12-7-0-1 with a win at home Sunday over the Fort Erie Meteors.
Matt Ruigrok, Michael Marchesan, Brodie Thoms and Adam Scholz scored for Pelham.
The Meteors, who fell to 4-13-0-1, got goals from Logan Warner and Cail Cirillo.
Canucks 8 Junior Canadians 1
Eden had two goals and an assist as the visiting Niagara Falls Canucks topped the Welland Junior Canadians Sunday.
Mitch Mendonca, Andrew Bruno, David D’Agostino, Garrett Downie, Justin Randhawa and Matthew Riva rounded out the scoring for Canucks, who improved to 16-2-0-1.
Michael Arch spoiled Zach Moore’s bid a shutout with five seconds remaining in the game.
Welland dropped to 5-13.
JUNIOR C
The battle of the Hawks found the Niagara Riverhawks on the wrong end of a 2-1 loss to the visiting Hagersville Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League action at the Gale Centre.
Karl Lavoie scored his second goal of the season in the first period after recently returning to the lineup after missing almost two months of the season with a broken ankle.
The Riverhawks ran into penalty trouble that allowed Hagersville to tie the game at the 27-second mark of the second period. Hagersville scored again late in the period just as a Riverhawk penalty expired to give them a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Neither team could score in the third despite the Riverhawks having some sustained pressure in the Hagersville zone in the last few minutes of the game.
“It was a close hard fought game. Both goalies played well. The difference was the special teams. They scored and we didn’t,” Riverhawks head coach Tim Barath said.
The Riverhawks outshot Hagersville 43-29 overall with Matt Boere making 27 saves in the loss for the Riverhawks
