Niagara’s men’s basketball team improved to 3-5 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play with a 78-57 victory over the Canadore Panthers.
Leading the way for Niagara were: Jordon McDonald, 18 points and six boards; Lequan Hylton, 15 points, nine assists and six rebounds; Centennial product Kennon Larmand, 12 points; Sterphone Augustin, 11 points and five rebounds; and, Saint Paul grad Johnnie Richardson, 10 points.
“We jumped to an early lead on the strength of solid defence and balanced scoring and never looked back,” Niagara head coach Phil Mosley said. “We are still working on consistent effort and limiting our mistakes in transition. Overall, a good team victory.”
Earlier in the week, Niagara dropped a 79-71 road decision to the Redeemer Royals after leading 32-23 at the half.
Larmand played his first game since returning from a preseason injury and led the Knights with 17 points. Also topping the stat sheet for Niagara were: Hylton, 13 points and six boards; McDonald, 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists; and, Augustin, 12 points and five rebounds.
“We battled tonight against a very good team. We showed flashes of playing great on both ends, but were unable to finish with the consistency necessary to get a win on the road,” Mosley said.
Niagara concludes the first half of the season with a Friday road game at the OCAA West Division leading Fanshawe Falcons (8-2).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Niagara’s women’s basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit at the half to record a 79-76 road win over Redeemer.
The victory was head coach Chris Rao’s first since taking over the team this season. Niagara (1-6) will head into the Christmas Break following a road game at Fanshawe Friday.
“It’s great to go into a tough environment at Redeemer and come out with a big win,” Rao said. “We played a great third quarter with four players finishing in double digits. We will look to build on this momentum heading into our game against Fanshawe.”
Top performers for Niagara were: Kaisen MacKinnon, 20 points and five rebounds; Jessyka Maliksi, 18 points; Eden grad Mackenzie Schroeder, 13 points and nine rebounds; Eden product Beth deBoer, 10 points; and, Smthville Chistian alumnus Terin Hultink, seven points and nine rebounds.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s men’s volleyball team (5-2) saw its three-match winning streak come to a conclusion with a 3-1 loss (7-25, 21-25, 25-17, 21-25) to Redeemer Royals.
Top performers for Niagara were: Elijah Bugiardini, 12 kills; Colin Prelaz, nine kills; Ashton Fehr, eight kills; Samuel Otten, seven kills and 10 digs; and, Robbie Zalewski, 36 assists.
Niagara hosts Fanshawe (4-4) Saturday at 3 p.m. and St. Clair (3-4) Sunday at 4 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s women’s volleyball squad improved to 5-2 in OCAA action with a 3-2 triumph (23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-25, 15-9) against Redeemer.
“Our girls persevered through and earned a tough win. We still did not start the first set well but did a good job in the second and third,” Niagara head coach Steve Dow said. “We limited some of our unforced errors and started putting Redeemer in tougher situations. The fourth set was a bit of a low point but they responded incredibly well in the fifth.”
Performing well for Niagara were: Welland’s Natasha Desjardins, 15 kills; St. Catharines’ Madelyn Berg, 15 digs; St. Catharines’ Montanna Taylor, 37 assists; and, Kristen Oudman, 12 kills.
Vineland’s Tamara Edwards returned to the lineup after missing the start of the season with an injury.
The Knights host Fanshawe (8-0) Saturday at 1 p.m.and St. Clair (5-2) Sunday at 2 p.m.
