Brock wrestlers had a strong showing at the recent Ontario Senior Championships held at Bishop Ryan Catholic in Hamilton
“It was a good way to finish off the first part of our season,” head coach Marty Calder said. “We had some strong performances and will look to build on those as it will be necessary once we hit championship season in February and March.”
Brock University wrestlers winning gold included: Governor Simcoe grad Kristina McLaren (50 kilograms); Hannah Taylor (59 kilograms); Darrion Sterling (72 kilograms); Ligrit Sadiku (61 kilograms), Cruiz Manning (65 kilograms), Ty Bridgwater (74 kilograms); and, A.N. Myer grad Richard Deschatelets Jr. (97 kilograms).
Brock University wrestlers earning included Daina Armstrong (55 kilograms) and Shauna Kuebeck (72 kilograms).
Brock varsity wrestlers placing third included: Samantha Romano (50 kilograms); Garette Saunders (57 kilograms); Joe Martin (61 kilograms); Juwan Burgess (86 kilograms) and Kellan Royds (92 kilograms).
Placing fourth was Beamsville grad Jess Tillmanns (62 kilograms) and Chris McIsaac (65 kilograms) while Clayton Pye (86 kilograms) was sixth.
Brock Wrestling Club members performing well included: gold medalists Jade Parsons (53 kilograms), Jessica Brouillette (62 kilograms), Indira Moores (65 kilograms) and Sam Jagas (57 kilograms); silver medalist Alex Moher (57 kilograms); bronze medalist Nick Rowe (70 kilograms); and, Max Budgey (79 kilograms ), who finished fifth.
OLYMPIC WRESTLING TRIALS
The 2021 Canada Games Host Society and the Brock Wrestling Club will be hosting the Canadian Olympic wrestling trials Dec. 6-8, 2019 in Niagara.
“I’m so excited to be able to compete at the trials in Niagara,” 2018 world bronze medalist Diana Weicker said. “There has always been great energy for the Niagara wrestlers as the community knows there’s a history here of so many past Olympians. The Niagara wrestling community has hosted so many great competitions in the past I know it will be a well-run and fun tournament.”
The event will serve as a test event for the 2021 Canada Summer Games in Niagara.
“The Canadian wrestling trials will be an important step in our planning and preparations for the Niagara 2021 Canada Games,” said Doug Hamilton, chair of the 2021 Canada Games Host Society board of directors. “The trials will be an opportunity for us to showcase one of our Games venues, our volunteers, and the passion that the Niagara Region has for sport in general, as well as the Niagara 2021 Games.”
The trials include 18 weight classes, comprised of six in men’s Freestyle, six in women’s freestyle and six in men’s greco-Roman.
HOCKEY DAY IN PELHAM
Hockey Day in Pelham will be held Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Pelham Community Centre when the Panthers host the St. Catharines Falcons in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
Tickets to the game are being sold by Pelham Minor Hockey Association teams at a cost of $10 for adults and $8 for seniors. Children under five are admitted free.
Half of the proceeds of ticket sales will go to Pelham Cares while a food donation bin will be on site. Game day prizes and the Catch the Ace Lottery progressive raffle are also available.
ZEZELA DRAINS 33
Andrew Zezela netted 33 points helping the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeat Jarvis Collegiate 80-79 in the 20th Annual Father Fogarty Tipoff Tournament.
Other top scorers for the Irish were David Jones (16), Shammar Campbell (12) and Jesse Raso (9).
St Pat’s from Ottawa defeated St Thomas Aquinas from Oakville 67-63 in the championship final and Assumption from Burlington topped St. Joe’s of Barrie 55-51 in the consolation final.
WELLAND PEEWEES BLANK PELHAM
Carter Kipp, Preston Wainwright, Quinten Hemauer and Tyler Rowland each scored as the Welland Telus Tigers major peewee A hockey team skated TO. 4-0 win over the Thorold Blackhawks.
Bryson Farr recorded his fourth shutout of the season as Welland improved to 8-2-3.
Earlier, the Tigers defeated the Grimsby Kings 5-2 on goals from Hemauer, Eli Moormann, Kaleb Seguin, Nicolas DiPietro and Mitchell Tomaino. Tate Schilte and Elijah Mercer replied for the Kings in the losing effort.
WELLAND ATOMS TAKE TWO
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers major atom A hockey team handing the Glanbrook Rangers their first loss in league play and also shut out the Lincoln Blades.
Mason Risto, Brennen Hagar, Colby Franchetti and Carson McComber scored for Welland versus Glanbrook.
Tanner Cutler scored twice and Franchetti once as Welland defeated Lincoln 3-0. Evan Corriveau made 13 stops to earn his second shutout of the season. The Tigers are 8-2-3 in Niagara District major atom action.
WELLAND NOVICES UNBEATEN
The Welland Mike Knapp Ford Novice Tigers novice hockey team improved to 10-0 in regular season play by blanking St. Catharines 10-0 and Glanbrook 4-0.
Scoring for Welland against St. Catharines were Mackenzie Welychka (2), Ethan Rousseau, Dylan Wood, Jordan Hotham, Blake Hudak, Sebastien Boucher and Liam Seguin. Jackson MacLeod recorded the shutout.
Seguin scored twice versus Glanbrook and singles were netted by Welychka and Ryan Rousseau. Recording the shutout was Brady Matte.
