MARTENS AND GEISBRECHT HONOURED
Local rowers Jacob Giesbrecht (Wainfleet) and Jacob Martens (St. Catharines) were named Brock’s male athletes of the week.
The two won bronze in the men’s lightweight double and helped the men’s lightweight four win bronze at the Canadian University Rowing Championships. Owen Voelkner, Zachary Whiteley and coxswain Raymond Wong were also in the four.
Brock’s women’s eight (Anna Maloney, Isabella Mazzarolo, Alyssa Toffolo, Amanda Martin, Brianna Spanics, Sabrina Tigwell, Jenna Osborne, Kayla Krasnor and cox Laura Court) also won a bronze medal.
Court was named the national outstanding female athlete and Brock head coach Peter Somerwil was given the President’s Award, which is for outstanding contributions to the sport of rowing.
“Obviously, rowing is very important to me. The reason I do this is because I’m passionate about the rowing,” said Somerwil. “I want others to have the same great experiences I’ve had in this sport. I want to give people the opportunity to excel.”
Court also won the Ontario University Athletics’ female athlete of the year last weekend.
“Laura is well organized. That girl is so intelligent, so smart,” Brock coach Swede Burak said. “She is worth four or five seconds in a boat alone, just her as a coxie.”
Last summer, Court won a gold medal at the under-23 world championships in the women’s eight.
SPAGNOLO HONOURED
Sir Winston Churchill alumnus Marilena Spagnolo was named an OUA soccer all-star for the second straight season.
The Brock goalie posted a 0.95 goals against average and finished third overall in save percentage (.877) to earn a second team all-star nod.
Brock midfielder Brianne Desa and forward Samantha Bayer were named second team all stars.
LACROSSE AWARDS
Three Brock men’s field lacrosse players were named Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association All-Canadians.
Honoured were Kurtis Woodland, Adam Kirchmayer and Latrell Harris.
BROCK HOCKEY
Adam Berg, Jared Marino, Ayden MacDonald and Ethan Spaxman scored as the Brock men’s hockey team beat Guelph 4-3.
Scoring for Brock in a 4-3 loss to Ryerson were Brody Silk (2) and Ethan Price.
Brock’s women fell 3-2 in a shootout to Ryerson with Katreena Whiteye and Annie Berg scoring for the Badgers.
BROCK BASKETBALL
Brock men’s basketball team fell to 2-1 on the season following a 79-73 loss to McMaster.
Leading the Brock men were Cassidy Ryan with 20 points and Tyler Brown with 13 points.
Brock’s women fell to 0-3 with an 81-62 loss to McMaster. Melissa Tatti led Brock with 15 points and seven rebounds. Courtney McPherson grabbed 16 rebounds and Kristin Gallant netted 14 points.
WELLAND MINOR ATOMS
The Welland Youngs Insurance Tigers minor atom hockey team defeated the Dunnville Mudcats 4-3 on goals by Lucas Homan, Jaxson Beck, Maxx Pals and Cade Bovine. Ethan Fortier and Beck had a pair of assists while Matteo Valleriani and Bovine each contributed one.
In a 4-2 loss to the Lincoln Wrath, Owyn Fewkes made more than 40 saves for Welland. Fortier and Cade Bovine netted goals and assists were contributed by Austin Bovine and Cole McCarthy.
Pals scored three times in a 5-1 win over Glanbrook and Kalen Sumbler and Cade Bovine also scored. Fortier, Austin Bovine, Homan and Evan Gaspich had two assists. Mackenzie Taylor walked away with the hard hat for hardest working player of the game.
Austin Bovine scored all four goals in a 4-0 win over Fort Erie. Homan, Cade Bovine and Joseph Boychuk each had one assist.
The Tigers defensive pairings were relentless for a second game in a row helping Welland improve to 4-3 on the season.
TIGERS AND BLADES TIE
The Welland Telus Tigers major peewee A hockey team could not hold on to a two-goal lead in the third period as the 6-2-2 Lincoln Blades battled back to even the contest in the game’s final 11 minutes of play.
Carter Kipp and Nicolas DiPietro scored for the Tigers and Kian Bartkiw and Alex Maresse replied for the Blades as the teams skated to a 2-2 tie.
Welland is now 4-2-3 in league play.
TIGERS EDGE WOLVES
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers clawed their way to a 5-3 come-from-behind victory against the league-leading Niagara-on-the-Lake Wolves in Major Atom hockey action.
Colby Franchetti scored twice for Welland and singles were netted by Tanner Cutler, Brennen Hagar and Ashlyn Armstrong.
Ethan Abraham netted a pair of goals for Niagara-on-the-Lake and Gavin Tomczuk also scored.
With the victory, Welland improves to 5-1-2 while Niagara-on-the-Lake remains tied for first place with a 6-3-1 record, although, Glanbrook has three games in hand with current record of 6-0-1.
Welland heads to Orillia this weekend to compete in the Jim Wilson Chevrolet Winter Classic.
TIGERS TOP TOURNEY
The Welland Mike Knapp Ford Tigers novice A hockey team captured its second tournament of the year last weekend at the Peter Mancuso Memorial Tournament in Niagara Falls.
The Novice Tigers won the tournament by beating the Amhurstburg Stars in the final.
The Tigers opened with three wins in round-robin play, beating the Burlington Junior Cougars 13-0, Alliston TNT Tornados 8-0 and the Willowdale Blackhawks 4-1. The Tigers beat a strong Whitby Wildcat team 4-1 in the semi-finals.
Scoring goals versus Burlington were Mackenzie Welychka (4), Ethan Rousseau (2), Dylan Wood (3), Sebastien Boucher (2), Noah Rousseau and Blake Hudak, Jackson MacLeod had the shutout.
Scoring versus Alliston were Welychka (2), Wood (2), Rousseau (2) and Jordan Hotham (2). Brady Matte recorded the shutout.
Netting goals versus Willowdale were Welychka (2), Rousseau and Hudak. In the Welland net for the win was MacLeod.
Scoring in the semifinal win versus Whitby were Liam Seguin (2), Welychka and Hudak. Matte recorded the win in goal.
In the final, Welychka scored in regulation time and Welychka, Wood and Rousseau scored in the shootout. In the Welland net for the championship game was MacLeod.
