NRHSAA senior football: Gryphons, Spartans victorious
The Greater Fort Erie Gryphons improved to 2-0 in Niagara Region High School Athletic Association Tier 1 football action Friday with a 32-0 victory over the visiting Centennial Cougars (0-2).
“Overall, we had a pretty complete game. All three units performed well and we were able to play a lot of our players,” GFESS head coach Dave Sauer said. “A few our players that played on offence in the spring have transitioned to defence and have been performing well. We managed to get some turnovers and took advantage of them.”
The Gryphons hope to keep things rolling this week.
“We have a real tough game this Wednesday against a good West Niagara team so we need another great performance by our team,” he said.
Contributing to the win for the Gryphons were: Bryson Donald with a pair of rushing touchdowns; Colin Laroche with a single rushing major; Brian Curtis with a TD reception from Laroche; Bo Train who kicked a field goal and a rouge; Brandon Craft and Xander Boake with interceptions; and, Boake with the recovery of a fumbled punt.
SPARTANS 18 HORNETS 8
The Westlane Spartans senior football team evened its NRHSAA Tier 2 football record at 1-1 with an 18-8 road victory over the Stamford Hornets (1-1).
“Although we made lots of mistakes, we played well enough to win,” Westlane coach Dean Mazzone said. “Our veterans stepped up and made big plays when we needed them. We have lots of respect for the Stamford coaching staff and knew that we would be in for a tough game. We need to clean up the small details to get to the next level.”
Leading the way for the Spartans were: Jacob Ranger with three touchdowns and 142 yards rushing; Drake Antic with 162 yards on the ground; Logan Kapitanchuk with a strong game at quarterback; Aiden Higgins with an interception; Mikhail Dwyer with four sacks; Aiden Bishop with three sacks; and, Kyle Herrera with 12 tackles.
For the Hornets: T.S. Johnson scored on a 60-yard pass from Jack Clarke; and, Anesu Lundy recorded a two-point convert on a reception from Clarke.
