Oct. 10 Niagara College report: Soccer, golf, volleyball, basketball, etc.
The Niagara Knights women’s soccer team’s final regular season home game of the season last Friday had some history attached to it.
In a 3-0 victory over the St. Clair Saints, Niagara Falls native Sydney Sica scored twice to become the all-time leading scorer in Niagara College program history. Sica’s 17 goals in 17 career games breaks the record previously held by Terin Hultink. There are two games left in the regular season for Sica to add to her impressive total.
Rylan Greatrix also scored for the Knights who improved to 5-3 and are poised to host a crossover game Oct. 22 at Youngs Sportsplex. Sierra Naccarato recorded her second shutout of the season in the victory.
The Knights conclude their regular season at Humber (7-0-1) Wednesday and Saturday at Conestoga (1-5-2).
Prior to last Friday’s game, Niagara recognized its graduating players. They are Valerie Andrew, Sica, Naccarato, McKenna Jackson, Jessica Hric, Megan Morgado, Rachel Looby, Greatrix and Avery Trask. Natasha Desjardins will also conclude her fifth and final year of eligibility this season but she will be recognized at the conclusion of the volleyball season.
MEN’S SOCCER
Niagara’s men’s soccer team completed its home portion of the regular season last Friday with a 2-0 loss to the St. Clair Saints (3-3-1).
Niagara, which has scored only two goals in eight games, dropped its fifth straight decision. The Knights will conclude their season with road games against Humber (8-0) and Conestoga (6-1-1). Niagara is tied with Mohawk and Lambton for the final playoff spot.
Prior to last Friday’s game, the Knights honoured graduating seniors, Joel Marinas, Simon Silverio, David Bandura, Travis Korten, Ryan Williams, Vinson Notarianni, Adrian Scocchia, David Hall, Blake Kokko and five-year veteran and team captain Noah DiEgidio.
DiEgidio has received several honours during his time at Niagara. He was awarded the team’s Leadership Award for the 2020-2021 season, was a previous Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Academic Award winner and was named Niagara’s Athlete of the Week numerous times during his career. DiEgidio has appeared in 41 career regular season game and 10 playoff games for Niagara.
OCAA GOLF
Niagara’s men’s golf team finished second in Division 2 of the 54-hole Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Golf Championships played at the Battlefield course at Legends on the Niagara.
Niagara’s individual results included: Anthony Sartor (Denis Morris) 83-77-82-242, alone in 20th spot; Johnny Romak (A.N. Myer) 84-86-89-258, tied for 31st; Reid Perusini 89-94-86-269, alone in 39th position; Owen Tope (Sir Winston Churchill) 92-90-91-273, alone in 41st place; and Tegan De Dellis 108-100-81-289, alone in 45th spot.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s women’s volleyball team made it to the semifinals of a preseason tournament at Sheridan before falling 3-0 to Conestoga.
On the way to the semifinals, the Knights defeated Boreal College 3-0, Fleming College 3-0 and Sheridan 3-0.
Niagara hosts Georgian College in exhibition play Wednesday at 6 p.m.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Led by tournament all-star Carter Thurman, a second-year setter, the Niagara men’s volleyball team made it to the finals of the Durham College Adidas Thanksgiving Classic. In the final, Niagara lost 3-0 to the Trent Excalibur.
In pool play, Niagara beat Loyalist 3-0, Conestoga 3-0 and Durham 3-0.
The men host Georgian in exhibition play Wednesday at 8 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
E.L. Crossley product Taryn Mitchell netted 20 points to power Niagara’s women’s basketball team to a 71-38 win over the Seneca College Sting.
The Knights host the Loyalist Lancers Saturday at 4 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Delroy Grandison drained 24 points as the Knights men’s basketball team fell 89-86 to Hilbert College of Hamburg, N.Y., in exhibition play.
Niagara hosts the Rochester institute of Technology Tuesday at 6 p.m.
WELLAND GIRLS SPORTS DAY
Niagara College will be hosting the Welland Girls Sports Day Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Welland Empire Sportsplex at 16 Townline Tunnel Rd.
It is a day for girls ages six to 12 to come out and learn to play a bunch of different sports.
Niagara College varsity coaches and athletes as well as people from the community will be on hand to teach the technical aspects of the sports as the girls try various sports from 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Adaptive sports will also be available.
Niagara College’s student council is assisting in providing lunch for all the girls at 12:30 p.m. After lunch, participants will have free time to return to whatever sport they want.

HOOPS CLASSIC
Niagara College will be hosting its annual Niagara College Girls Hoops Classic starting Wednesday with three qualifying games at both E.L. Crossley and Welland Centennial.
Niagara College will host the finals on Saturday with the consolation game set for 6 p.m. and the championship game for 8 p.m.
